John Hinderliter, Artist’s Bio

As my oldest friend volunteered to write:

John Hinderliter is an award-winning illustrator and fine artist living in

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Born in Atlantic City, NJ, and raised in Canton, PA (widely celebrated as

“the jewel of Bradford County”), John moved to Pittsburgh in the

mid-seventies to attend The Ivy School of Professional Art, a once-respected

career school that had recently fallen on hard times and, as such, been

forced to lower enrollment requirements substantially. Against all odds,

John graduated with honors, job offers and a profound respect for the varied

(and often bizarre) peculiarities of people engaged in the clamshell game

known as advertising.

John’s burgeoning talents as an illustrator and designer soon led to a

series of increasingly high profile and equally high pain-in-the-ass

employment opportunities. In 1985, after determining that a life spent

dealing with interoffice intrigue and casual Friday was a life not worth

living, John decided to strike out on his own as a free-lance illustrator.

Over the past 20+ years, his work for a wide range of clients, including

______, ______, ______and ______has won John a

shelf full of shiny industry awards, the grudging respect of a small circle

of peers and a modest but growing ulcer.

Recently, John’s interest in oil painting has led to a fulfilling and

slightly more reputable side career as a fine artist. His work has been

featured in galleries and prestigious juried shows throughout the tri-state

area.

He is also available for children’s birthday parties and Bar Mitzvahs.

A fan of all types of outdoor adventure, John squanders much of his

free-time, discretionary income and diminishing health on mountain biking,

Hashing, kayaking and geocaching. A modern Renaissance man, his other

interests include clogging, competitive speed Sudoku and his lovely fiancee,

Dee Dee.

I have been a past member of the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society and am currently a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators. Through these groups I have exhibited at numerous galleries in the area, such as Planet Art Gallery, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, World West Galleries, Melega Gallery, Arts in the Garden, and 707 Penn Gallery. My fine arts work is primarily oils, but I’ll use whatever suits my needs.

I have won a few awards for my paintings:

2008 Mavuno Festival, Best of Show.

2009 “99” Show, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, jury award.

2009 “Small Works” Show, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, jury award.
