DevelopedEmergency Room management software. Features developed:

  • Staff Assignment - Assignment of staff (doctors, nurses, etc.) and their associated patient care responsibilities.
  • Callback list management - Maintenance of a list of follow tasks to be completed after patient has left the ER such as Quality Control, notification of the receipt of additional test results and user defined tasks.
  • Preference Management - Specification of user and system preferences.
  • Incomplete Chart Worklist - Maintenance of list of tasks to be completed in order for patient's chart to be considered final and ready for billing.

Primarily developed on middle tier, using Java, Spring, Microsoft SQL. TDD development with JUnit and Fitnesse. Also worked on UI, using Java Server Pages, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery. Preference Management functions were built with Visual Basic and SQL.

Provided education to downstream organizations for each feature developed.

January 2009 – February 2011 Scrum Master - Soarian Clinical Documentation

Project Management for a team of 8-10 developers with 2-4 analysts/testers.

Followed Agile practices: Sprint Planning, Spring Review, Retrospectives, Backlog management, etc. Maintained release backlog using VersionOne.

Tracked team’s progress towards our sprint goals and provided a weekly report out to senior management team.

January 2008 – January 2009 OPENlink Interface Messaging System

OPENLink is a proprietary application-independent integration engine designed specifically for healthcare systems.

Designed and coded enhancement to reporting functionality for the OPENLink system, using Visual Basic and MS Access.

February 2007 – January 2008 Disease Managment

Developed initial release of Disease Management system for Diabetes care. Project was developed as part of a government grant to better monitor patient care for Diabetes patients.

January 2005 – February 2007 Invision Bed Management

Lead developer for Bed Management project which allowed hospitals to better manage their bed capacity and patient bed assignments.

Primarily focused on UI and middle tier development. UI was developed on proprietary web-based architecture using HTML. Middle tier was built with COBOL and a proprietary database engine which was built upon a hierarchical database structure.

Developed Bed Board which produced a graphical display of the beds assigned to each hospital unit and their status (assigned, dirty, empty, etc.)

Bed Search function allowed hospital staff find the appropriate bed for the patient.

Bed Control Worklist functionality tracked tasks involved with the turnover of a bed after patient has been discharged.

Granted two US patents for Bed Search Algorithm, which used patient factors as well as administration/patient preferences to find the most appropriate bed.

Served as Patent Manager for department.

March2001 – January 2005Soarian Nursing

Soarian Nursing provided for the entry and display of patient data to support nursing functions.

Module lead on several development projects including a marketing demo and several releases of a web based clinical hospital system. The development team was comprised of 5-8 developers. My responsibilities included project planning, resource allocation, issue resolution and status reporting. I was also the main contact point between UI designers, senior management, product analysts and the development team.

Lead UI developer for nursing functionality. Performed high-level and detailed design of various UI components. Implemented Java classes as well as JSP pages that were deployed on a WebSphere platform.

Coordinated software build testing across multiple development teams. Responsible for initial triage of defects as well as assignment of issues to the appropriate team member.

Member of a development team that designed and implemented an Intranet site for our department, which was ASP driven using a combination of DHTML and VBScript.

April 2000 – March 2001 Lifetime Clinical Record

Primary UI developer, coding and supporting the HTML user interface.

Maintained server code written in MicroFocus Cobol that accessed a DB2 database.

Shared Medical Systems : June 1989 – July 2000

September 1999 - April 2000 CommuniHealth

Web developer for CommuniHealth application. Software consisted of a base set of proprietary software as well content from several 3rd party vendors which were packaged together to provide a unique web site for each of our client hospitals which served as their patient facing portal.

Created Active Server Pages using HTML, JavaScript and VBScript, accessing a Microsoft SQL database via ADO. The software was deployed on a Microsoft NT server using IIS.

Developed a Provider Locator application utilizing Mapquest mapping software prior to this being commonly available on the web.

After completion of first release, project was sold to drkoop.com

April 1994 - September 1999 CareOrders

Developer for a client/server based clinical ordering system. The application was developed using Visual Basic, Microsoft Transaction Server and Microsoft SQL database.

Lead developer of a Clinician Master maintenance application. Participated in database design and object analysis as well as application development.

Served as Quality Coordinator for multiple releases. Coordinated testing resources, oversaw the creation of test plans, and defect tracking.

May 1989 - April 1994 Invision Clinical Observations & Results

Developer for an IBM mainframe based clinical results repository. System was written with CICS, COBOL, OAS, and a proprietary hierarchical database.

Developed and supported an HL7 interface to 3rd party clinical systems. Main point of contact during interface installation for both 3rd party vendors and customers. Provided customer education on interface installation and support.

Served as support coordinator. Performed the initial triage of all issues and was the primary contact between SMS support personnel, the customer and application development group. Assigned issues to appropriate developer and monitored their progress.
