1. Charlemagne-Christian King, king of the Franks, lived to be 72 (twice the age of the average person at the time), Holy Roman Emperor
2. Secular-Non-religious (but not anti- religious ex= secular book, secular law)
3. Excommunicate-To expel someone from the Church
4. Parish- A single church, center of village life in the Middle Ages,
5. Tithe-1/10 of your income (like a tax) given to the Church, this was mandatory
6. Benedict-Organized a monastery in southern Italy and rules for monks, developed rules for monks that they are to lead orderly lives of prayer, study, and poverty
7. William the Conqueror-Conquered England in 1066 under Norman invasion known as Battle of Hastings, created the Bayeaux Tepesty to depict his victory, brought Feudalism to England, created Tower of London
8. Feudalism-Social contract: Granting land to loyal subjects called vassals in return. This helps some of the chaos going on in Europe. There is no social ladder to climb.
9. Vassal-Owes the Lord his or her loyalty and support in return for land
10. Magna Carta-Signed by King John in 1215- said king is not above law
11. Saladin-Muslim warrior that defeated Christians in 1187, however he allowed Christians to still enter Jerusalem
12. Jerusalem-Sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, captured in 1099 by Christian
13. Black Death-Started in Italy in 1347 and killed ¼-1/3 of Europe
14. Delta 32-Gene mutation that makes people immune to Black Death
15. Hundred Years War-Fought from 1337-1453 between England and France
16. Joan of Arc-Helped rally the French ; accused of witchcraft and heresy
17. Battle of Hastings-Norman victory in 1066
18. Anti-Semitism-Discrimination against Jewish people
19. Carthusian monks-Lived as hermits, sheltered from the outside world
20. Guilds-Associations of workers to keep quality high
21. Diocese- a group of parishes by geographic region
22. Inventions from crusades- clock, windmill, compass
23. Charlemagne’s empire- consisted of Italy, Spain, France (Eastern Europe)
24. Alcuin- brought in by Charlemagne to help him set up a school system to educate people to then help spread Christianity
25. Pope Urban- Starts 1st crusade and gave a speech to inspire support and participants
