Secure Message eXchange (SMX) for healthcare organisations

7 Jun 2012

Three of the leading organisations providing secure electronic message services to the health industry have formed a collaboration to enable exchange of messages between their respective customers.

The founding members of the Secure Message Exchange (SMX) are Global Health, HealthLink and DCA, who service the industry with their ReferralNet, HealthLink and Argus products respectively, and have a combined presence of over 85% of the current messaging users.
Up until now, users of each product could only send and receive electronic messages to other sites with the same vendor product. With the SMX, systems from each of the vendors’ products will be able to seamlessly interchange messages, Australia – wide.
The basis for the exchange is the recently gazetted Secure Message Delivery (SMD) standard, which has underpinned the basis for interoperability. Each vendor can focus on developing to the standard, which makes it easier to agree the technical integration details.
It is planned for the service to commence as a controlled release within the next three months as the signatories integrate with necessary infrastructure components.
Membership of the SMX will be open to other software organisations that have systems based on the SMD standard, are prepared to provide service levels of support, work on delivering sustainable approaches around infrastructure and only exchange messages based on agreed standards.
Members of the SMX will retain existing relationships with their customers. The intention of the service is to enable those customers a wider range of services from their existing vendor.
