Sustainability Double Degree Program

The Student Sustainability Initiative (SSI) works to advance student efforts to create a culture of sustainability at OSU through programming that fosters environmental, social, and economic justice. SSI believes educational institutions have a responsibility to model innovative tools, systems, and ways of thinking as living laboratories for sustainability, and provide students the experiences to become leaders in their communities creating sustainable change.

The Sustainability Fellowship Program pairs passionate student leaders with campus departments and community organizations working to solve local and global sustainability challenges through research, education, and community engagement. Sustainability Fellowships contribute to projects that support sustainability goals while developing leadership competencies and transferable professional skills through supervision, mentorship, networking, and professional development.Participation in the program will enable you to develop the skills to be a sustainability leader including:

The Sustainability Double Degree Program is recruiting a Sustainability Fellow to serve as Sustainability Curriculum Fellow for the Sustainability Double Degree and Minor Program.The purpose of the Sustainability Curriculum Development Fellow position is to develop sustainability curriculum in line with the sustainability learning objectives as referred to by the SSI. It is the intent of the SDD Program and the Sustainability Fellow to develop solid sustainability curriculum with the purpose of engaging students in learning and acting for sustainability. This includes assisting the SDD Advisor in implementing outreach activities to build the Sustainability double degree community. Outreach efforts are targeted at both existing students as well as to non-SDD students to increase the number of Sustainability majors.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an aptitude to be effective in all responsibilities of the position.

Fellowship Responsibilities:

The Sustainability Curriculum Fellow will provide support for the SDD team in the following ways:

  • Design, develop and provide term to term continuity of community-based projects in experiential learning and service learning projects designed into SUS courses.
  • Work with SUS experiential learning coordinator to develop solid OSU campus and Corvallis wide community partners.
  • Determine gaps in current Sustainability course offerings.
  • Assist in the development of courses by conducting research (e.g. literature reviews, surveys and/or focus groups of students and faculty, university best practices, etc.).
  • Work with SDD experiential learning coordinator to determine community partners to develop relationships with for student Practicums.
  • Assist with coordination of SDD Advisory Board meeting materials.
  • Prepare a Category 2 proposal to bring current the SDD electives list in the OSU course catalog.
  • Work with OSU sustainability groups (SSI, Sustainability Office, Waste Watchers, Center for Civic Engagement) to strengthen connections and partnerships in the development of sustainability curriculum.
  • Provide sustainability curriculum information to the Sustainability Office for the AASHE STARS Report.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a current OSU student with a strong desire to be a sustainability change agent.
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel.
  • Must be a currently enrolled student at Oregon State University in at least 6 academic credits.
  • Must be in good academic standing for the term prior to selection and during entire period of employment.
  • Must maintain at least a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (undergraduates) or 3.0 (graduates).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong research and critical analysis skills.
  • Highly organized.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and passion for holistic (environmental, social, and economic) sustainability
  • Prior involvement in leadership activities, student organizations, event planning and/or outreach activities
  • Maintain at least a cumulative and term GPA of 2.5 (undergraduates)

Terms:

  • Fellows are required to participate in monthly professional development with SSI as members of the Sustainability Fellows Cohort. These professional development activities will be paid hours with a 10 hour requirement per term.
  • Position dates:September 21, 2016 – June 9, 2017
  • Expected to work an average of 15 hours each week
  • Required to attend bi-weeklysupervisory meetings
  • Pay rate is $10.05 per hour
  • Office location: 3017B Agricultural & Life Sciences Building
  • Fellows will be expected to complete a reflective E-Portfolio and present on their learning on campus at the end of the year.
