Peer Mentor Application

Spring 2011

The Kearney International Center staff needs supportive and responsible students who can help us during International Student Orientation each term. This application serves as a general application for the Peer Mentor program. Check with the specifics for each term to apply (see separate information for more details):

  • Deadline to apply must be met to be considered.
  • A two hour mandatory training is required the day before check in and orientation.
  • Peer Mentor requires full participation for all three days of check in and orientation but not necessarily for evening activities.
  • Orientation Assistants are considered for fill-in times during orientation and for events following the dates of the mandatory orientation. Those not selected as Peer Mentors may be considered for Orientation Assistants (hours worked are counted towards contribution hours).

This is a great opportunity to gain leadership skills, meet new friends from around the world, and help new students adjust to their life at MSU, Mankato. Please fill out the application form and submit it to the International Center. If you are an international student and need contribution hours, as a Peer Mentor, you may earn up to 20 contributions hours for your assistance. You do not automatically receive 20 hours, and actual volunteer hours may actually exceed 20. You will be contacted about the schedule by e-mail, two weeks after the dateline. Graduate students are encouraged to apply for this position.

Please write your preferred e-mail correctly and clearly.

  • What is your greatest strength and weakness?

  • Specific Dates set each term – check with the International Center for the following dates

Application Deadline: November 29th, 2010

Peer Mentor Training Session: Tuesday, Jan. 4th 2011 in CSU (room will be assigned) from 10a.m. to 12p.m.

Check-in date for new arriving students: Wednesday, January 5 (you will be assigned a 5 hour block of time)

Orientation Dates:Thursday, January 6 and Friday, January 7th (full days) 2011

Event Dates held after Orientation:Saturday, January 8 and Sunday, January 9th, 2011

This is a change from past international student orientation programs. The past years have had three full days of orientation – we are adapting to a one day check in with a resource fair and some optional activities (Wednesday, January 5th) and two full days (from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.) of International Student Orientation activities. Therefore, you should be prepared to be available for the two hour training, a five hour time of check-in, and two days of orientation activities.
