A comparative Study of Teaching Languages for Specific Purposes in Algeria

Study Day organized by LIPLFS

On 03 May 2018

Deadline for abstracts submissions: April 26th, 2018.

Languages for specific purposes (LSP) have always intrigued the curiosity and interest of both researchers and educationists for decades. Being able to intertwine general language with specific fields, LSP becomes intensely demanded mainly with the ubiquity of developed technology that necessitates not only the update of both students and professionals’ terminological and syntactic knowledge at the academic and professional contexts respectively, but also the mastery of discourses that pertain to each field (Jean-Jacques RICER, 2008: 20). Although French has been hitherto the principal language of education in Algeria, English could access the same position, yet it tends to supersede French in a number of academic fields for which intense training markets have been opened up yielding to different significant perspectives (Denis LEHMANN: 1997). However, has this competition at university shifted to teaching LSP as well? Therefore, the main objective of this study day which is entitled “A comparative Study of Teaching Languages for Specific Purposes in Algeria” is to have a practical comparison between the situations of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and FOP (French for Specific Purposes) in different Algerian academic fields.

The abstractsshould tackle one of the following axes:

Axis 01: The current situation of teaching/learning languages for specific purposes in the Algerian universities

Axis 02: The impact of linguistic and educational policies on teaching FOP/ESP

Axis 03: Historical overview of ESP/FOP introduction to Algerian Universities
