SMART START AWARD

(NationalSchool Breakfast Week)

Each year, FSNA honors members who have successfully promoted the school foodservice nutrition program during National School Breakfast Week with the Smart Start Award. It recognizes a school center (elementary and secondary) for their outstanding promotional activities during NSBW.

Background

The School Breakfast Program (SBP) started as a pilot program on October 11, 1966 to provide funding for breakfast in poor areas and areas where children had to travel great distances to school. Modeled after the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), which has been in existence since 1946 and amended numerous times, the SBP’s intent was to provide a nutritious breakfast to children who might otherwise not receive one. According to Public Law 89-842, the NSLP and SBP combination was intended to provide “a coordinated and comprehensive child food service [program] in schools.”

Who May Apply

Foodservice Employee/Manager section members of SNA and FSNA and local associations may apply for this award. A Foodservice Employee/Manager section member is one who is assigned to one school or a central kitchen that serves more than one school.

Even if you have submitted an award in the past, do not start until you have read the General Information and Procedures, Award Application Process. This is important in making sure you are following the criteria required for the award process and they may have changed from the previous year.

Selection Procedure

The application must be postmarked on or before February 1 of each year and sent to the FSNA Scholarships and Awards Chair. Awards will be based on entries of both elementary and secondary for small, medium, and large districts for previous year’s NSBW activities. (Refer to District Size Determination Chart on page six [6]). (Total of six [6] possible awards). All documentation must be neatly bound in a 1” or smaller folder/binder, on one-sided 8 ½” x 11” paper with the completed entry form serving as the cover page for all documentation.
