Workshop Background
For our November workshop delegates will have the opportunity to see first hand how involving patients in the development of their care records and then enabling them to access them can improve both patient care and performance. Dr Amir Hannanhas kindly invited the Faculty of Health Informatics to hold this event in his surgery in Hyde,Cheshire, to enable delegates to meet him and some of his patients and learn how the implementation of his online patient record system has helped to meet the demands of the modern NHS.
The Hyde surgery used to be run by the infamous Dr Harold Shipman. After Shipman was arrested detectives discovered the Hyde doctor had altered the computerised medical records of patients in a bid to cover his tracks. When Dr Hannan took over, he spent three years learning to regain his patient’s trust in part by sharing medical records with his patients. Initially this involved giving the information on disk and then subsequently via a secure website which would let his patients access their patient records to allay fears and give them more information on what their records contain. The system has the resources to make new appointments, order new prescriptions and enable patients to see their full GP electronic health record..
Dr Hannanbelieves that his system has improved the relationship between patient and doctor and that there are real tangible benefits from the technology. Despite helping to establish a system where patients control access to their record, he is alsoan advocate of the Shared Care Record system being rolled out across England and feels both systems can and should co-exist.
At the event in Dr Hannan’s surgery, delegates will initially hear first hand from patients about how this system has impacted on their lives and relationships with the surgery. They will talk openly about the benefits and problems of the system and will be open to delegate’s questions.
After this Dr Hannan will join us to talk about the issues concerning ‘Record Access’ where it currently is, where he sees it will be goingand what challenges have yet to be faced. He will also demonstrate how this technology could help him meet Governmenttargets, such as the 18 week wait time, and how he plans to link his system to the HealthSpace web portal currently being developed by NHS CfH.He will discuss “Real-time Digital Medicine” as a “new” concept that captures in 4 words what this is all about and how we are all part of a true paradigm shift in healthcare.
The final part of the day will be taken up by a tour of the practice so that delegates can see for themselves and discuss candidly the day to day use of the system Dr Hannan has put in place.
We hope that we will also be joined on the day, by representatives from the Summary Care Record project who will be able to offer their expertise and knowledge on how Dr Hannan’s record system compares to what will be rolled out across England.
