Leadership Challenge Guidelines for Pepsico Board Presentation

DUE: Friday, December 18, 2010 1:00 B 5:00 pm

It is January, 2000, and you are Gary Rodkin. Roger Enrico has asked you to make a brief, 10-minute presentation at the next meeting of the Pepsico Board. This leadership challenge includes two tasks for your team:

1. Prepare a one-page memo (one to two pages) summarizing your presentation to the Pepsico Board. Please include issues like your goals, strategy, content, intended outcomes, and anticipated challenges. Bullet or outline format is preferred.

2. Develop your board presentation and come to class with a member of your team prepared to speak as Gary Rodin to the Pepsico Board.

Guidelines:

This Board Presentation is an important opportunity for you as Gary Rodkin. You have had limited contact thus far with the 13 directors (who include former chairmen of IBM, AT&T, and Sears). Your content and presentation style should reflect your objectives:

1. To persuade the Board that you have a good grasp on the key opportunities and challenges for PCNA; and

2. To build your credibility with the Board by laying out a clear and realistic game plan.

You believe that the Board will be impressed if you demonstrate that you are a good strategic thinker AND that you have a plan that can be executed.

  Expect to have no more than 10 minutes. The Board has a busy agenda.

  The presentation should be true to life: prepared and attuned in all ways to the reality of how Rodkin would make an important presentation to key constituents.

  You may use any visuals or ancillary materials you like: PowerPoint, handouts etc.. (The computer and A/V equipment in the classroom will be available for your use. If you want to use PowerPoint, bring your file on a flash drive or a laptop. Check your presentation on the A/V equipment beforehand, especially if you are using a Mac. )

  See the syllabus for additional information and study questions to guide your group=s analysis of the situation. The group is to only use the information in Case: Gary Rodkin at Pepsi Cola North America (A) (HBS 403080) for this assignment. The case is in your binder.

NOTE: This assignment is an opportunity to integrate learning from the semester. The challenge is graded. All groups will present to the board during this class. All group members will get the same grade; and grades will reflect assessments from the instructor and the class, as well as input from the Pepsico Board.
