Q26 Thank you for participating in this study. Your participation was very valuable to us. We know you are very busy and very much appreciate the time you devoted to participating in this study. There was some information about the study that we were not able to discuss with you prior to you participating in the study, because doing so probably would have impacted your actions and thus skewed the study results. I would like to explain these things to you now. In this study, we were interested in a phenomenon called "gender identity threat": what happens when people are told that they do not satisfy some of the norms associated with their gender. In particular, we wanted to explore the effect of a gender identity threat on food choice and the intentions to exercise or to eat a healthy diet. Based on prior research, we expect to find that men who experience a threat to masculinity will tend to eat more masculine foods, and women will tend to eat more feminine foods. On the basis of the personality test included at the beginning of the study, you were given feedback about your masculinity or femininity, extraversion and openness to experiences. In particular, you were told that your responses were either below or above the average range of responses typical for your gender. This feedback was in fact not reflective of your responses, it was part of the study manipulation and it was randomly assigned to you. This deception was necessary because providing information about the true nature of the feedback could significantly influence the results of the experiment and it would also not allow for the manipulation of gender identity threat (a core aspect of the experiment). We hope this clarifies the purpose of this research, and the reason why deception was used (or we could not tell you all the details about the study prior to your participation). It is very important that you do not discuss the study with anyone else until the study is complete. Our efforts will be greatly compromised if participants come into this study knowing what it is about and how the ideas are being tested. If you have any questions or concerns, you may contact Kasia Banas at or on 01316504521. Thank you again for your participation.
