China Airport Sector Briefing

UKTI and BAG will be hosting an afternoon industry briefing which will set out the opportunities for UK companies in China. Companies are invited to attend an Airport Sector Briefing where the delegates will present on opportunities at their airports.

The delegation comprises:

China Opportunities

In the 12th Five Year Plan (2011-2015) for Aviation Development, China has stipulated that it will improve aviation networks by further developing core international hub airports and trunk route airports as well as secondary regional airports. The Chinese Government will actively promote general aviation development, reform air space management systems and improve the efficiency for air space resource allocation and utilisation. They plan to build 70 airports together with a number of upgrades and expansions. A large number of these projects will be located in the mid-west of China. Estimates of this airport infrastructure expansion are around £40bn. It is proposed that by the end of 2015, there will be 230 or more commercial (certificated) airports in mainland China.

A summary of these development plans are:

·  Construction of the new Beijing Airport (NBIA) and another 69 new airports.

·  Expand Guangzhou, Nanjing, Changsha, Haikou, Harbin, Nanning, Lanzhou, Yinchuan and other 93 airports.

·  Conduct research into the building of new airports in Dalian, Chengdu, Qingdao and Xiamen.

·  Speed up construction of new-generation air traffic control systems.

Please see below for a brief intro of airports that attend the briefing:

Xiamen: Xiamen International Airport is renovating and expanding the existing Gaoqi Airport. A new terminal (Terminal 4) will be built for international air-routes.The renovation and expansion project is set to be completed by 2014. Upon its completion, it can handle 27million passengers per year.

Xiamen is also preparing its new airport project which will be completed and put into use in 2019. Covering 25 square km, the new airport at 4F level will be built with 4 runways in the long-term plan. It can accommodate A380 and 70mln passengers will be handled every year.

Dalian: Dalian is building its new airport which will be the biggest airport on the sea after its completion in 2018. With total investment of 15bln RMB, Dalian aims to make it a landmark building in its international shipping centre, integrating with external transport system and links. 4 runways are planned in the new airport which can accommodate A380.

Qingdao: Based on Qingdao City Comprehensive Transportation Planning (2008-2020), Qingdao New Airport is to be designed for 4F category to accommodate A380, the top level for local airport. In 2009 Qingdao started the creation of Qingdao

Airport Master Planning (Assessment Version). There are 5 proposals for 5 different locations. The final plan needs to be confirmed and approved by the State Council.

Chongqing: The third phase of Chongqing airport expansion will take place during 2011 – 2015. This will include a third terminal (580,000 m2), and a third runway (3,800m). Capacity will rise to 50m passengers and 2 million tons of cargo p.a. Chongqing airport looks to start issuing equipment and materials bids early 2013

while service related tenders are expected to begin after 2013 in a long term. Future developments after this phase will include a fourth terminal and fourth runway with capacity rising to 70 million passengers per annum.
