Instructions:For this activity, you will complete a Historical Map of the World as it appeared in between roughly the 1st and 18th century(1000-1700's). On your map, you will draw in, label, and colour such relief as:

You will use the Canadian Oxford School Atlas, Thinking about our Heritage and your text Across the Centuries as sources of information for this activity. Your map should be neatly and accurately labelled, coloured, titled, and possess a legend with symbols. Symbols should be used where possible and for such relief as cities, trade routes and goods, landmarks, and areas where reliefs may overlap. Dates that are given must also appear on the map legend. In areas where there may be considerable overlap, the surrounding areas including bodies of water and continents may be used in conjunction with lines and arrows to label areas. WARNING: Europe, the Middle East, and South East Asia will be congested – so be both careful an creative when labelling! In completing your map, you should refer to the provided Map Guidelines handout for map-making suggestions.

Map Guidelines:

1. Ligtly draw a line ( with ruler, using pencil)
2. Label lightly with pencil
3. Check and correct errors
4. Go over with a fine liner (or ink)
5. Erase remaining pencil marks (when dry)
6. Start small then work large (label cities then provinces; label lakes then oceans)
7. Label horizontally(except rivers and roads) / 8. Rivers an roads labelled along their course
9. Start or end cities at their “point”
10. Do not use blue for land; do not use the same colour if the regions share a border.
11. All maps can be coloured using just 4 colours
