Dear Parents,
Our Spelling tests this year will be given bi-weekly, with a few exceptions, and will count as major test grades in English. Attached is a list of our Spelling words for the entire year. Reminders for Spelling tests will be included on the homework calendars each week, with the title of “List 1”, “List 2”, etc. noted at the top of each column. Each of these lists contains 23 words. In addition to these 23 words from our Spelling list, 5 “surprise” words will be added randomly each testing day. A list of these extra “surprise” words is attached. These additional words have been especially chosen because they are high frequency words for FAAM 2nd graders. Many/most of these words are ones that the children already know how to spell, but are worthy of repetition. Please review these “surprise” words with your child each week. Some words may be included on tests more than once; however, some may appear only once as a “surprise” word on a Spelling test. For the first week only, the “surprise” words will be identified, and listed on the column labeled “List 1.” After the first Spelling test, the students will need to be familiar with all of the “surprise words” to ensure they do well on that portion of their Spelling test each week. Note that there is a list of extra or “surprise” words that will be added second semester. In addition to the 28 words your child will spell each week, (23 from the basic bi-weekly list plus 5 surprise words), a fill in the blank vocabulary page will be included. After taking the Spelling test, the students will use their test as a word bank, and complete a sheet to check for understanding of word meanings.
Please remember that neatness counts on Spelling tests! A handwriting grade will be given on each test, with the grade notated on the test. Each 9 weeks, your child will be given a handwriting grade that will count as a minor grade in English. If your child’s teacher cannot read a word your child has written, the item will be marked wrong. For example, if the teacher cannot decipher an “a” from an “o” because of poor penmanship, the word will count as a misspelled word.
We are looking forward to a great year! Happy Spelling!
