POSITION DESCRIPTION
Title: Library Clerk -Part Time (Summer Position)
Department: Fayette Public Library
GENERAL PURPOSE
Perform general clerical work in support of public library programs, services, and activities; staff the circulation desk and provide patron service. Perform related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Librarian, Assistant Librarian and/or Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Staff the circulation desk: check materials in and out; renew materials; make copies.
Answer telephone and provide information or otherwise assist or refer patrons as appropriate; relay calls; take messages as necessary.
Sort and shelve returned books and materials.
Calculate and collect fees for lost and overdue materials and other library services such as Interlibrary loan requests, copies, cards, etc.
Instruct patrons in the use of library materials, public access catalogs, and Internet usage.
Physically assist patrons in locating desired materials.
Process and shelve new materials, as instructed: apply appropriate cover material or packaging for circulation; affix property stamp; barcodes; and date due slips.
Assist in maintaining library collections and facilities by picking up toys, straightening books, chairs, shelves, newspapers and magazines; and emptying book drops.
Assist in carrying-out special programs, including assistance in setting up, refreshments, crafts, clean up, etc.
Shelf read collection to ensure proper order, as time allows.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge: Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Skills: Skill in recording data; skill in written & verbal communication; skill in making simple arithmetic calculations; skill in proofreading materials to ensure accuracy; skill in the use of listed tools and equipment.
Abilities: Ability to operate moderately complex computer systems; ability to follow verbal and written directions; ability to communicate effectively with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to make effective use of time; ability to consistently apply attention to detail; ability to research materials in library setting; ability to identify needs of patrons and the most effective method of response and assistance; ability to adapt to routine repetitive activities; ability to perform multiple tasks within a short period of time
Education: Currently attending High school, High school graduate or GED.
Experience: General clerical experience which involved providing services and/or information to the public.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Telephone systems; personal computers using word processing, graphic, and database management software; Internet and public access computer networks; computer printers & scanners; copy machine; microform reader-printers; fax machine; calculator; cash register; pencil sharpener; paper cutters and shredders; staplers; glue guns.
