1. Oral Presentation on Gastrointestinal System Disorders- (students had to develop a 10 minute Power Point presentation and verbally share it with fellow students).
2. Well Elder assignment Students had to choose a person 65 years of age or older and conduct an interview with a written report focusing on interpretation/analysis of the content of the interview.
NRN 102/102L:
1. Exam questions: Focusing on communication techniques
2. SBAR: Evaluate the students’ effectiveness using SBAR communication in shift report. The benchmark of 85% has been selected for Fall 2014.
NRN 103:
1. Oral presentation: Students were assigned into groups of 4 and given specific medication topics that they had to present to the class using the following format:

1. Online survey: The survey will include the following question:
After simulation, I can differentiate effective, accurate, and congruent transfer of information using therapeutic verbal and non-verbal communication skills effectively with patients, family members, and health care team members to achieve quality patient care.

about communication techniques was assessed.

2. Clinical Mystery oral presentations were evaluated in the areas of Report, Leadership, & Organization. / NRN 101/101L:
1. Oral Presentation: Overall 93% of the students scored at the good or excellent level.
2. Well Elder assignment 98% of the students were graded at satisfactory level or higher.
These findings indicate that the students in 101L are able to communicate effectively and present their information in a coherent and organized manner.
NRN 102/102L:
1. Exam questions:76.4% of students correctly identified effective communication techniques by answering exam questions correctly (82.6% for Obstetrics; 70.2% for Pediatrics).
2. SBAR: 97% of students were successful in demonstrating effective communication using the SBAR tool.
NRN 103:
1. Oral presentation :
18 (64.3%) students received unsatisfactory. 5 (17.9%) students received satisfactory. 3 5 (17.9%) students received very good. 0 (0%) students received excellent.
NRN 106/206:
1. Online survey: 94% of the students demonstrated the ability to communicate appropriately and accurately in a simulated setting.
NRN 112:
1. Exam questions: Out of 31 students, 94% answered communication question #21 correctly; 87% answered communication question #22 correctly; 84% answered communication question #35 correctly; and 100% answered communication question #36 correctly. Collective average 91%.
NRN 200:
1. Exam questions: Overall average of percent correct – 84.28% indicating students have a good understanding of what constitutes therapeutic communication.
NRN 201/201L:
1. Exam Questions: 78.78% of the students demonstrated a good understanding of what constitutes therapeutic communication.
2.Communication Analysis: 79% students were able to correctly analyze their second Communication Analysis with 85% accuracy
NRN 202/202L:
1. Quiz questions: 68.4% of the students demonstrated the ability to coherently and professionally explain the key concept of triage in the emergency setting.
2. Clinical Mystery: 42 students were evaluated on their presentation of a clinical mystery.
Findings:
95% of the students were graded at satisfactory level or higher.
Leadership:
88% of the students were graded at satisfactory level or higher.
Organization:
95% of the students were graded at satisfactory level or higher.
These findings indicate that the students in RN 202L continue to communicate well in the areas of interaction, leading a group in an activity & are organized in their process & presentations.
Based on all the above results, an average of 84% of the students in the nursing program or in the pre-nursing courses have demonstrated a good understanding of what constitutes appropriate communication necessary for working in a healthcare environment.
Appropriate and accurate communication is a necessity when working in any healthcare environment. The goal is to have 100% of students demonstrate effective and accurate transfer of healthcare information. / N/A / NRN 101/101L 1. Oral Presentation: Lecture material will expand and/or explain content to better enhance student retention.

NRN 102/102L:
1. Exam questions: Continue to reinforce therapeutic communication to maintain meeting the benchmark.
2. SBAR: Will continue to use SBAR tool for oral and written report.
*Standardized case scenarios will be implemented as indicated.
NRN 103:
1. Oral presentation: Utilize the same questions again in the fall to obtain comparative data.
NRN 106/206:
1. Online survey: Faculty will continue to identify any areas of weakness or misunderstanding with students regarding therapeutic communication.
Simulated experiences promoting effective communication skills will be used.
NRN 112:
1. Exam questions: Utilize the same questions again in the fall to obtain comparative data.
NRN 200:
1. Exam questions: Discussion board threads will be utilized when indicated. Continue to use role play with students and re-evaluate test questions.
NRN 201/201L:
1. Exam Questions: Continue to reinforce therapeutic communication to maintain meeting the benchmark and re-evaluate test questions.
2. Communication Analysis: Reinstruction on interpretation of non-verbal behavior and defense mechanisms.
NRN 202/202L:
1. Quiz questions: Faculty will continue to identify any areas of weakness or misunderstanding with students regarding therapeutic communication and re-evaluate test questions.
2. Clinical Mystery: Oral presentations will continue next semester.
The current SLO’s-communication will continue to be the focus for the outcomes in the pre-nursing and nursing courses next semester.
