Kia ora koutou,

Welcome back to the New Year.

To all those new teachers in the region – a warm welcome to you. I encourage you to make contact with art teachers close to you and start a professional relationship with them to assist each other in the changing times ahead.

As part of my work this year I will be running a series of cluster meetings focussing on helping HOD’s and TIC’s manage this change process.

All art departments were notified about these meetings by fax in February with follow up emails. If you did not know about these you need to get onto my mailing list.

Term One:

Taupo – Feb 17 th

Gisborne – Feb 24 th

Hauraki – March 4 th

Rotorua – March 10 th

Hamilton – March 18 th

Tauranga – March 25th

Term 2,3 & 4 TBA

I look forward to meeting up with you all there, and thank those who have offered to host.

I am always happy to respond to any queries and questions via email and ph, so please don’t hesitate to ask.

What change?

NEW ZEALAND CURRICULUM

As you will all be aware, the New Zealand Curriculum is now implemented and you will be required by your schools to make appropriate changes to your programming and documentation to meet the needs of these changes. For some of you this won’t take much, but for many it is a great time to clear out the closet and really look at your existing programmes and ask yourself a few challenging questions.

Like:

1. What is important (and therefore worth spending time on), given where my student s are at?

2. Where are they at? How do I know?

3. What have they learnt already and what do they need to learn? What do they want to learn?

4. What strategies are most likely to help them learn this?

5. What happened as a result of teaching, and what are the implications for next time?

There are some excellent resources to help you online with getting your planning up to date.

Go to Units of work

There are new units that senior teachers might be interested in.

Making Comment as They Make Art: Senior Visual Arts and The New Zealand Curriculum (2007) These three senior Visual Arts units integrate new aspects of the New Zealand Curriculum 2007 with learning sequences, tasks, and assessment opportunities associated with NCEA Achievement Standards.

Also the Teacher Resource Exchange is constantly being updated with new units of work.

Go to TKI Art Resources

You might like to check out the new images of L2 & 3 folios posted in the student gallery.

NCEA

All level 90018 (1.1) activities should be written to the Version 3 Standard now.

There has been a new 1.1 activity posted in TKI/NCEA which covers these changes.

FURTHE R ASSESSMENT OPPORTUNITIES (FAO )

I have had a number of you asking me to explain more about the FAOs in Art, as there seems to be talk about this at senior management level.

Here is my simplified interpretation (with an Art lens) of a rather complex process …

FAO’s are not mandatory and are problematic in art because…

You need to offer it to all students under the same assessment conditions as the first activity. That means you have to provide a new activity and the same amount of class time/homework time and remark them all again!

Is this manageable for you?

However, good assessment practice in Art may involve…

Ongoing feedback and feed forward to students, becoming less specific closer to the final due date.

Once students have submitted their work for Summative Assessment, a R esubmission might be appropriate if

· It only relates to specific aspects where the student made a mistake.

· Students correct mistake on their own, quickly – 1 week or so.

· The teacher only provides general advice e.g. “you need to use art terminology”, not “you need to say…” Don’t directly tell them what’s wrong – no specific feedback.

· There is no more teaching.

There has been a discussion about this on Visartnet if you want to find out how others have been dealing with this. Go to Visartnet Archive

NCEA BOOKLET FROM DI SMALLFIELD

Di has updated the current NCEA booklet with 2010 dates, added the draft new matrix and a couple of Unit Plans incorporating the NZC. The rest of the booklet remains the same as for 2009. 2011 will see a radical change with the level 1 Achievement Standards. Apart from ITO unit standards, unit standards as we know them now, will not exist.

If you do not have the NCEA booklet; it is available from Kohia Teachers Centre; ring 09 623 8977.

CAFé

CAFE, the Arts Online networking facility enables you to connect with Artists from various disciplines, who are available to work in your area This could be a really good way of providing your students with opportunities to work in a field that you lack the confidence or skill to teach them in.
