STEM Collaborative Steering Committee Meeting

Engaging the Business Community
- STEM Business Advisory Board to be formed, as follows:
 - Peter Stiling, Special Faculty Assistant in the Office of the Provost
 - Russ Coughenour, Career Services
 
Representatives from:
- USF Research and Innovation (1)
 - College of Medicine (1)
 - College of Engineering (1)
 - College of Business (1)
 - College of Arts & Sciences (1) – Dr. Potter
 - College of Marine Science (1)
 - USF St. Petersburg (1)
 - USF Sarasota/Manatee (1)
 - Business & Industry (25 – 30)
 
- Representatives from each college will be asked to identify 4 – 5 companies for the business & industry list
 - Will work on engaging local community colleges and private institutions in the future
 - Dr. Rose stated that our agenda needs to be clear, prior to engaging other institutions
 - Dr. Stiling suggested that we would share what skills we are looking for in their graduates
 - Dr. Marty suggested we have a clear plan and framework as a phase 1, then reach out as a phase 2
 - Dr. Teague agreed and feels this is important in maintaining control of this initiative
 - Dr. Stiling suggested postponing the meeting with the private schools, and community colleges until the Fall
 
Data Analysis – find processes
- From survey results, STEM recruitment and retention seemed to have the greatest response
 - Dr. Cassill will categorize businesses and include in the data analysis document
 - Physics, Health & St. Petersburg to be added to research funding list:
 - Dr. Sarkar – Physics
 - Dr. Marty – Health
 - Dr. Cassill – St. Petersburg
 - Dr. Sarkar suggested going broader with what is included rather than singling out projects. Group agreed.
 - Dr. Teague suggested that if we include “on boundary” projects in one area, we should include in all areas
 - Dr. Marty suggested including titles and funding source on list
 - Dr. Teague feels the titles are needed to determine our areas of strength
 
Next Steps: Thinking about our final report & Comparing USF System to other institutions
- Dr. Stiling suggested that the group divide up and each research a few schools. Group has been divided as follows:
 - Dr. Marty – Conferences
 - Dr. Teague – Internet search & USF Library
 - Dr. Stiling – FL Private Institutions
 - Dr. Cassill – U.S. News Top 10 (most research $)
 - Dr. Sarkar – FL Public Institutions
 
Action Items
- Dr. Sarkar – provide physics list, and research FL public institutions (Deadline: April 1, 2015)
 - Dr. Cassill –provide St. Petersburg list, and research Top 10 schools (Deadline: April 1, 2015)
 - Dr. Marty – provide Health list, and research STEM conferences (Deadline: April 1, 2015)
 - Dr. Stiling – research FL private institutions (Deadline: April 1, 2015)
 - Dr.Teague – research STEM content via internet search & USF Library (Deadline: April 1, 2015)
