Topics in Translational Neuroscience
This 1 CU class will be offered every year beginning spring 2018
This course will introduce graduate students in neuroscience and related disciplines to basic mechanisms and clinical features of major categories of nervous system disease. Each two-hour classwill consist of two parts; a formal lecture followed by a seminar on the same topic. The formal basic science lectures will discuss genetic, molecular, and cellular mechanisms relevant to the disease examined while the seminar will illustrate how that information can be used is the clinical setting to promote further discovery and inform treatment. Some of the seminars will be associated with the Clinical Neuroscience Training Program (CNST) to provide the opportunity to interact with medical students and clinicians. The course will rely on assigned readings of primary research papers and discussions during class.
Purpose
While many NIH programs support research experiences for new basic and new clinician scientists, not all of these trainees have the opportunity to receive formal course work and training experience needed to move across the broad range of disciplines needed to translate basic discoveries in to proven therapies. Areas of potential overlap include hypothesis development, the design of clinical research projects, biostatistics, epidemiology, and the legal, ethical and regulatory issues related to clinical research.
The course consists of lectures, discussions, and oral presentations of original papers by the class and is oriented for both pharmacology and non-pharmacology majors.
