Major Problems of Farmers
A survey was carried out on the problems faced by the farmers in three states in India. In the survey 125 farmers of five districts were surveyed including three districts, Betul, Raisen and Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, one district Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh and one district Wardha in Maharashtra. 25 farmers participated in the survey from each district. Following are the main points of survey:
- Not Getting Seeds from the Society:
92% farmers of Betul district, 68% farmers of Wardha district and not even a single farmer of Vidisha, Raisen and Lucknow districts got seeds from the Society.
- Non-availability of Kissan Credit Card (KCC):
88% farmers of Raisen district, 76% of Lucknow district, 72% of Vidisha district, 72% of Wardha and 68% farmers of Betul district does not have Kisan Credit Card (KCC) even now.
- Less Utilization of Chemical Fertilizers
60% farmers of Vidisha district, 52% of Wardha district, 36% of Lucknow district, 24% of Raisen district and 20% of Betul district do not use Urea fertilizer.
56% farmers of Wardha district, 48% of Lucknow district, 44% of Raisen district, 20% of Betul district and 4% of Vidisha district do not use D.A.P. fertilizer.
96% farmers of Wardha district, 88% of Vidisha district,80% of Betul district, 76% of Raisen district and even a single farmer of Lucknow district do not use Phosphorous fertilizer.

- Shortage of Electric Power Supply
Power supply is available for only for 4-10 hours in a day to farmers of Betul district, 6-10 hours to farmers of Raisen district, 6-9 hours to farmers of Vidisha district, 4-12 hours to farmers of Wardha district and 14-22 hours to farmers of Lucknow district.
- Sale Price is less than Minimum Support Price:
50% farmers of Betul district get Rs. 50-200 less price than support price. Likewise 60% of Vidisha district get Rs. 20-200 and 52% of Raisen district get Rs. 50-150 less price than the support price.
- No compensation for Damaged Crops:
52% farmers of Betul district could not get any compensation for their crops damaged due to unfavorable weather. Likewise the crops of 96% farmers of Raisen district got damaged and 68 % farmers could not get any compensation. Crops of 80% farmers of Vidisha district got damaged and 56% farmers could not get compensation, Crops of 48% farmers of Lucknow district got damaged and 20% farmers could not get any compensation. Crops of 76% farmers of Wardha district got damaged and 72% farmers could not get compensation.
- Problems in sowing crops twice:
Due to lack of rain during the time of sowing, 48% farmers of the Raisen district, 40% farmers of Wardha district, 20% farmers of Betul district and 4% farmer of Vidisha district had to sow crops twice. On the other hand, farmers of Lucknow district did not have this problem.
- Problems of Net Profit and loss:
Betul District
Net Profit and Loss per acre in wheat (Rabi) production –
- 8 % farmers earned net profit of Rs 1000-2500 per acre, likewise 16 % farmers earned Rs 2500–5000 and 8 % earned Rs 5000-7500.
- 16% farmers faced loss of upto Rs 1000 per acre, 12% faced loss of Rs1000-2000 and 4% faced loss of Rs 2000-7000 per acre.
Net Profit and Loss per acre in Soyabean (Kharif) crop –
- 4 % farmers earned net profit of Rs 1000, 8 % farmers earned Rs 1000-2500, 8% farmers earned Rs 2500-5000 and 8% farmers earned Rs 5000-7500 per acre.
- 8% farmers faced loss of Rs 2000 per acre.
Raisen District
Net Profit and Loss per acre in wheat (Rabi) Production –
- 16 % farmers earned net profit of Rs 0-1000 per acre, 8 % farmers earned Rs 2500 – 5000, 12 % earned Rs 5000-7500 while 16 % farmers earned profit of more than Rs 7500.
- 16% farmers faced loss of Rs 0-1000 per acre land.
Net Profit and Loss per acre in Soyabean (Kharif) crop –
- 4 % farmers earned Rs 1000-2500 profit, 04 % farmers Rs 2500-5000, 8% famers made profit of Rs 5000-7500 while 4 % farmers earned profit of more than Rs 7500.
Net Profit and Loss per acre in gram (Rabi) –
- 4% farmers earned Rs 1000-2500 profit per acre while 4 % farmers earned Rs. 2500-5000 and 4% earned profit up to Rs 5000-7500.
Vidisha District
80 % farmers of the district gained profit in production of Rabi and Kharif crops while 20 % faced losses as below –

- 4 % farmers gained net profit of Rs 0-999, 8 % farmers gained Rs 2500 – 4999, 8 % gained Rs 5000-7499 while 4 % farmers gained profit of more than Rs 7500
- 8 % farmers faced loss of Rs 5000-7400 per acre.
Net Profit and Loss per acre in soyabean (Kharif) crop –
- 8 % farmers gained profit of Rs 1000-2499, 16 % farmers gained Rs 2500-4999, 12 % farmers made profit of Rs 5000-7499 while 4 % farmers gained profit of more than Rs 7500.
- 8 % farmers faced loss of Rs 0-2499 per acre.
Net Profit and Loss per acre in gram (Rabi) –
- 8 % farmers gained Rs 2500-4999 profit, 4 % farmers gained Rs 5000-7499 while 4% made net profit of more than Rs 7500.
- 4 % farmers faced loss of Rs 0-999 per acre.
Lucknow District
Net Profit and Loss per acre in wheat (Rabi) Production –
- 52 % farmers gained net profit of Rs 1000-3000 per acre, while 48 % had net profit of Rs 5000-10000 per acre.
Wardha District
Net Profit and Loss per acre in cotton Production –
- 12 % farmers gained net profit of Rs 300-1000 per acre.
- 20 % farmers gained net profit of Rs 1000-3000 per acre.
- 68% farmers gained net profit Rs 5000-20000 per acre.
- Break-down of electric motors (in one season):
Due to voltage fluctuation, in Betul district 8 % farmers had break-down of motors once, 12 % farmers had two times and 12% farmers had three to ten times in one crop season.
In Raisen district, 12 % farmers faced break-down of motors once, 40 % farmers faced two times and 4% farmers faced more than two times.
In Vidisha district, 12 % farmers faced break-down of motors once, 8 % farmers faced two times and 4% farmers faced six times.
In Lucknow district, 8 % farmers faced break-down of motors once and 8% farmers faced two times.
In Wardha district, 20 % farmers faced break-down of the motors once, 24 % farmers faced two times and 4% farmers faced break-down of motors more than three times.
- DP ( Transformer for Distribution) going out of service (in last 3 years) :
In the Betul district 12 % farmers faced the problem of DP going out of service once, 12% farmers faced two times and 16% farmers faced this problem three to six times in last 3 years. During this period in Raisen district 12% farmers faced this problem once, 8% faced two times and 40% faced three times. Also in Vidisha district 12% farmers faced this problem once, 12% faced two times and 16% farmers faced this problem three or more than three times. 12% farmers of Wardha district faced the same problem three to four times, while not even a single farmer of Lucknow district faced this problem once in last three years.
- Not Getting labors on time and increasing rates:
Due to NREGA 92% farmers of Lucknow district, 88% of Wardha district, 60% of Betul district, 32% of Raisen district and 20% farmers of Vidisha district could not find labours on time and also they faced problem of increment in labour rate by Rs 10-70 per day.
- Wild animals & stray cattle damaging the crops:
25% crop damage of 12% farmers in Betul district has been caused by wild animals like Nilgai ( wild cow) , Rohi, Monkeys, Deers, Wild boar, while 35% crop damage of 24% farmers in Raisen district, 5-10% crop damage of 24% farmers in Vidisha district, 2-25% crop damage of 92% farmers in Lucknow district and 20-25% crop damage of 72% farmers in Wardha district has been caused by one or more of the above animals
Likewise, 10% crop damage of 28% farmers of Betul district, 25% damage of 56% farmers of Raisen district, 5-15% damage of 40% farmers of Vidisha district, 2-20% damage of 68% farmers of Lucknow and 2-10% crop damage of 36% farmers of Wardha district has been caused by stray cattle.
- Decline in the quality of soil :
The farmers of all five districts- Betul, Raisen, Vidisha, Lucknow and Wardha have reported the problem of deterioration in the quality of soil.
- Lack of information:
88 % farmers of Wardha district, 84% of Vidisha district and 76% of Betul district do not know about insurance of crops. Likewise not a single farmer of Raisen and Lucknow district knows about the insurance of crops.
- Using manure:
80% farmers of the Lucknow district, 32% of Betul district, 16% of Raisen district, 8% of Wardha district do not use manure, while no farmer of Vidisha district use manure.
- Do not get loans for agricultural equipments:
Only 32% farmers of Wardha district got loan of Rs 5000-40000 for agricultural equipments like motor pump, diesel pump, thresher etc, while not even a single farmer of Betul, Raisen, Vidisha and Lucknow districts took loan for this purpose.
- Getting poor chemical pesticides:
Chemical pesticide of 12% farmers of Betul district was found to be poor in quality, which was worth Rs 2000-5000, likewise pesticide of 8% farmers of Vidisha district and 4% farmers of Raisen district was found to be poor in quality, which was worth Rs 10,000 and Rs 1800 respectively.
- Problem of keeping accounts of inputs for crops:
88% farmer of Vidisha district, 84% farmers of Lucknow district, 80% farmers of Raisen, 80% farmers of Betul district and 48% farmers of Wardha do not keep records of crops.
