OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

1.  To act as a Quality Manager for the Analytical Services Laboratory (ASL) ensuring that defined, accredited analytical services continually meet the ISO 17025 standard and that ASL’s accreditation scope is developed in line with the School’s enterprise/consultancy aspirations.

2.  To contribute to the marketing of ASL and to provide advisory and quotation services to ASL clients.

MAIN DUTIES

1.  Maintain and develop the ASL ISO17025 accredited quality system in the School of Science and to act as its Quality Manager, planning the annual schedule and managing the system as detailed below.

2.  Act as the principal contact with UKAS, the accreditation assessment body, hosting the annual audit and coordinating and responding to any actions that arise as a result of the assessment and attending to any communications with UKAS as they arise.

3.  Plan, chair and minute Management Review Meetings every 4 months and monitor and track all actions that arise.

4.  Plan the annual internal audit schedule and conduct audits or make suitable arrangements for other ASL staff to perform audits. Ensure all non-compliances and other actions are dealt with in a timely fashion.

5.  Manage complaints and incident systems and the process of continual improvement through correct use of the corrective and preventive actions.

6.  Manage the ASL Quality Document system by controlling all changes according to procedure and contributing to written changes in the Quality Manual and Procedures and related documentation. Monitor any changes to external documentation and standards that directly impact on the quality system. Maintain system files and indexes, adhering to security procedure.

7.  Promote and maintain close working links with enterprise active staff in the School in order to facilitate analytical (ASL) enterprise activity and development and to ensure analytical services to the business community are conducted in a consistent and professional manner.

8.  Contribute to the marketing of ASL, the creation of promotional material, finding new business opportunities and participating as required in customer relations activities.

9.  To undertake such other duties as may be required by the School, the Director of Enterprise (SoS) from time to time. To provide specialist technical support service in mass spectrometry

SCOPE***

The post holder will be required to operate effectively with staff in the School of Science, in other parts of the University and in other (external) organisations. In particular, the job holder will be accountable for maintaining quality standards in the Analytical Services Laboratory to meet the requirements of ISO 17025 and UKAS, the accreditation body. The post carries no direct budgetary or staff management responsibilities. The post holder will be expected to liaise with external companies and, in consultation with the Technical Manager, provide quotations for analytical testing work to be undertaken by ASL.

Other Requirements

The role is part-time (0.2 FTE) and therefore priority must be given to duties associated with Quality Management to ensure adherence to and maintenance of the accreditation standard, ISO 17025. Other duties such as marketing of ASL shall be regarded as secondary.

This is a part time post, 7 hours per week.

This post is on SG8 salary scale (spine points 36-43) £35,646 - £44,016 per annum.
