Look Out! There are children about
At Nundah State School we are committed to doing everything we reasonably can to ensure that no child is injured whilst they are being picked up from school. For quite a while now we have all felt frustrated as people use the loading zone in different ways. Our school has a good loading area on Boyd Road, and will shortly have an extended loading zone on Buckland Road, and we want to ensure they are both used to their best capabilities.
To improve these loading zones, we would like to adopt a Transport and Main Roads program called “Look Out” which is designed to improve how children are picked up. We know all families do not currently use the pickup zone, however we felt all families would want to know how this program works. So, How does the program work?
The loading zone will be supervised by volunteer monitors. These monitors will ensure the loading zone is functioning effectively and safely by;
Ensuring there are no unsafe practices in the loading zone area, such as;
- Children loading into double parked vehicles
- Loading into the driver side of the vehicle
- Vehicles standing for longer than 2 minutes, and
- Vehicles loading and leaving from the rear
When you drive into the loading zone, the monitors will call your children from the waiting area. The monitors will allow for the first 2 vehicles to load and move on before allowing any further vehicles to load.
If your child is not waiting for you when your vehicle gets to the front of the queue, you will be asked to move on and rejoin the end of the queue.
To move forward with this program, we will need the support of all parents who use this zone to adhere to the process, and more importantly, we are calling for volunteers to assist in coordinating the program. If you feel that you could assist in giving around 20 minutes of your time once every week or every fortnight, please email the Road Safety Committee on to offer your assistance or for any further information.
