Criteria for publication in Springer Theses
‘Springer Theses’ is restricted to truly outstanding original work that is recognised for its quality and ingenuity, and makes a substantial contribution to research in the respective field.
For a thesis to qualify for publication, it must fulfil all of the following criteria:
· It must be written in good English
· The topic of the thesis should fall within the confines of the physical sciences.
· The work reported in the thesis must represent a significant scientific advance.
· If the thesis includes previously published material, permission to reproduce this must be gained from the respective copyright holder. Previously published papers (reproduced verbatim) may constitute a maximum of 30% of the thesis.
· The thesis must have been examined and passed during the 12 -18 months prior to nomination.
· The thesis should include a foreword by the supervisor outlining the significance of its content.
· The thesis should have a clearly defined structure including an introduction accessible to scientists not expert in that particular field.
This initiative strives to support today’s best young researchers, therefore publication of the thesis in the series does not affect existing legal or contractual commitments to the university or other body concerning uses of the original version of the thesis within the scope of regulations of the university for the doctoral degree.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. A lot of the material in my thesis has already been published in journal articles. Can my thesis still be accepted for publication in Springer Theses?
As long as the material in your thesis has not been reproduced “verbatim” (word-for-word) your thesis still qualifies for publication in Springer Theses. However, Springer would like to publish theses which also include information not published in journal articles e.g. sections on methodology, a detailed introduction to the topic. This material is valuable to our readers and we can bring this work to a wider audience.
2. My supervisor would like to publish some of my results subsequent to my Springer Theses publication. Is this ok?
For Springer it is absolutely no problem to publish material from your Springer Theses publication in journal articles. However, you should check the policy of the journal in which you would like to publish because some journals count a thesis publication as a prior publication. If you are not sure, please submit all articles to the journals in which you would like to publish before nominating your thesis to Springer Theses.
3. Which modifications will I have to carry out before my thesis can be published?
In general we only require very minor changes to be made to the thesis before it is published in the series. This could include expanding the introduction, if necessary, to make it more accessible to newcomers or removing pages containing official text for your university.
4. I am not sure how to obtain permissions to reproduce the material I have published in journals.
Your editor at Springer can send you information about this and help you through this process.
