Summer Math and Reading Challenge
The Kingdom Charter School of Leadership’s School Students
You ask your child to read over the summer...have them practice math skills, too! Can you imagine how far behind his/her peers your child would be if he stopped attending math class at the end of March? If a student doesn’t practice his/her math skills during the summer, it has the same effect on math achievement. Researchers have found that the lack of math and reading skill practice over the long summer months results in an average loss of 2.6 months of learning.
At The Kingdom Charter School of Leadership, the school data has shown that the effects of long summer breaks has taken a toll on students’ scores and learning. The teachers would like to challenge students to continue to practice math skills as well as reading skills over the summer, and will recognize every student who demonstrates that they have practiced in related activities over the summer. For example, if your child spend just 10 minutes a day on a math activity, he/she will have completed over 10 hours of math! Practice can include playing flashcard games, completing a bedtimemath.org problem, completing a math worksheet from the school website, playing games from Deck of Cards Night, participating in Math Club, incorporating real-life math such as estimating costs of back-to-school supplies or balancing the cost of a grocery store visit or family vacation, and playing online math games to keep fluent with math facts and/or other math skills.
How to get started? It’s easy! Fill out the attached Math Challenge Log each time you complete a math activity over the summer. The goal is to complete at least 1 math activity a day. Also, your reading challenge is attached. The goal is to read and log at least 100 reading steps over the summer. At our first Super Tuesday event, you can choose 3 books to get you started with your summer reading along with 3 postcards to send back about how you liked the books. We’ll also be offering Math Club so you can participate in organized math activities at school to stay connected. If you need ideas or printables for math games, worksheets, and other ideas, visit our school page and look for Summer Work 2017-2018 for printables and more! Your final activity is to complete your ALL ABOUT ME project to bring to school on the firsts day. This will be your chance to show how AMAZING you are and let your teacher and class get to know you better!
