The Red Shield is one of the most recognised and trusted ‘brands’ in Australia. The use of the shield started when the army began in England. Members of the Salvation Army were encouraged to be identified as Salvationist “even if it be but the wearing of a shield”. This shield was white metal with the words Salvation Army pierced into the metal. It was adopted world wide with the spread of the Army.

The shield was used in World War One when Salvation Army Officers set up welfare huts in France to help servicemen. Later it was used to provide accommodation for those returning from the war. Some time during this period the background changed to red and the letters white. It was said that this was a better colour in war areas as the white and shiny metal reflected the light too much.

William Booth

William Booth learnt early what it was like to be poor. His father invested money unwisely, lost all and became an alcoholic. Schools were not free in those days and William had to be sent out to work. His father died a year later leaving William to help his mother support the family. William was apprenticed to a Pawnbroker. William did not like the work and saw many people come in to pawn their goods to buy food and pay rent. Many ended up unable to get their belongings back. William was a Methodist at this time and began to preach in the street when he was about 15. When he finished his apprenticeship at 19 William moved to London, worked for a pawnbroker but preached in the streets on Sundays. The Methodist Church felt uneasy that William was preaching to ‘workers’ and when time came for him to renew his membership the church refused. A wealthy merchant offered William ₤2 a week to help him give up work and become a full time preacher with the ReformersChurch. This was where William met Catherine Mumford whom he married in1855. William went back to school to study Latin, Greek and Theology. Hewas appointed in the Methodist New Connexion. He resigned when they would not release him to preach full time. He joined the Christian Mission and held an open air meeting on 2nd July 1865. William continued for 13 years, with some success. While reading an article about the Christian Mission as a ‘volunteer army’ Bramwell, William’s son said ‘I’m no volunteer’. William changed the name and The Salvation Army was born.
