Position Summary

The primary purpose of the role is:

·  To assist the Director of Radiotherapy (DoR) to direct and lead the Radiotherapy Service for Genesis Care.

Genesis Care aims to provide the highest levels of patient-focused care across a network of nine cancer treatment centres. Genesis Care employs over 180 staff with a referral network of over 100 consultant oncologists. Adding to Genesis Care’s existing network of nine cancer treatment centres, Genesis Care has committed to developing two new treatment centres in areas of need across the UK (Essex and Hertfordshire opening in early 2016). Over the next 12 months, a suite of the latest cancer treatment technologies and techniques will also be introduced across all 11 facilities. In addition, our cancer patients are expected to benefit from continued investment in new personalised treatment techniques such as SABR, SRS and brachytherapy.

Genesis Care has significant experience in providing high-quality services in a public hospital tertiary teaching environment across Australia and is now planning to introduce, participate in and potentially develop research and clinical trials here in the UK.

Position Reports

The Director of Radiotherapy – UK

Accountabilities/Key Responsibilities

Main duties and responsibilities

1.  Assist in the direction and leadership of radiographic and physics staff to deliver a comprehensive radiotherapy service for Genesis Care ensuring the safe and accurate use of high dose ionising radiation to treat patients with cancer, whilst maintaining a safe environment for other patients, visitors and staff.

2.  Lead the Technical Development Group to oversee the clinical delivery of radiotherapy treatments.

3.  In collaboration with the DoR, Executive Team and Business Development Team, identify opportunities for new business and services and lead their technical and scientific implementation.

4.  In conjunction with other directors, carry out horizon scanning to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field.

5.  Ensure that the radiotherapy service offers patients treatments that are of the highest quality and safety and meet the best international standards of care.

6.  Ensure that radiotherapy service meets all appropriate statutory regulations including those of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000 and Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 (IR99).

7.  Direct the radiotherapy-related research and development activities for Genesis Care including own-account projects and participation in national or international clinical trials.

8.  Deputise for the Director of Radiotherapy at senior events as required, including conferences, SMT etc.

Management/Organisational

1.  Professionally responsible and accountable through the DoR for the delivery of the Radiotherapy service.

2.  Manage the operational requirements of staff members of the service reporting directly into this role highlighting salient issues to the DoR.

3.  Be prepared to manage the individual or collective performance of a member of staff/the team

4.  Ensure that complaints and disciplinary matters are dealt with appropriately and in accordance with Genesis Care policies and procedures.

5.  Ensure optimum utilisation of available staff and resources in order to provide an effective and efficient service; take overall responsibility for appraisals, staff development, sickness absence, disciplinary matters, recruitment and selection.

6.  Be a coach and mentor to staff within the service to build people management knowledge, skills and capacity.

7.  Proactively work with individual centres to provide the necessary support to unblock any issues in order to facilitate the delivery of centre budgets

8.  Undertake the appraisals of all Centre Physicists and contribute to the appraisals of other team members as required

9.  Take responsibility for the training and development of all members of the team

10.  Provide direction, supervision, support and recognition of staff activities and promote collaboration, cooperation and teamwork through effective leadership and management strategies.

11.  Contribute to annual business plans and contribute to the delivery of corporate and centre budgets. In collaboration with the Finance Director and Finance Team, lead on the development of physics budgets as required,

12.  Develop, maintain and manage the performance of the team across the service and ensure these standards are communicated effectively with staff and meet all appropriate external requirements.

13.  Perform other appropriate duties which may be required from time to time by the DoR.

Clinical and scientific

1.  Assist the DoR to direct and lead the Radiotherapy Service.

2.  Work closely with the appointed Radiation Protection Adviser(s), architects and builders to advise, design and monitor the required radiation safety aspects of new and existing radiotherapy facilities.

3.  Work closely with physics and radiographic staff to develop and safely implement new treatment techniques and equipment.

4.  Liaise with referring oncologists to ensure that the radiotherapy service meets their requirements.

Teaching, training and research

1.  Lead the delivery of training to physicists, radiographers, dosimetrists and other staff groups as appropriate.

2.  Undertake comprehensive training needs analysis in support of learning and development objectives.

3.  Keep abreast of developments in radiotherapy, in radiation physics and in clinical oncology, and ensure that these are disseminated and implemented wherever appropriate.

4.  Promote research through publications and where appropriate supervise the research and development work of more junior members.

5.  Communicate the results of research and development, as appropriate, by publication in peer-reviewed journals and by presentations at national and international scientific meetings.

Education/Professional

1.  Participate in appropriate Continuing Professional Development programmes (CPD).

2.  Keep abreast of the latest technical and scientific developments and their applications in radiotherapy and in radiation physics and associated fields and attend suitable seminars and courses as part of personal development and to further the work of the service.

3.  Ensure all activities are carried out within a quality framework and meet regulatory requirements.

4.  Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant statutory requirements and to ensure that all working practices comply with such requirements with particular reference to radiation protection and health and safety.

5.  Complete an annual training needs analysis as part of yearly appraisal function to support the learning and development strategy.

Miscellaneous

1.  Implement and ensure compliance with a certified Quality System (e.g. ISO9001:2000) in the areas of work for which the post holder carries responsibility.

2.  Work the hours necessary for the proper and efficient performance of the work.
