ACONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE ALINE RUCKER COGGINS OF LEXINGTON COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are delighted to learn that Aline Rucker Coggins of Lexington County will celebrate her one hundredth birthday onMarch 25, 2010; and

Whereas, Mrs. Coggins,the daughter of Harry and Mamie Rucker, was born on March 25,1910.Having been born in the early part of the twentieth century, she has been witness to nearly all the incredible changes and developments that have come to this nation from that time into the twentyfirst century; and

Whereas, a native of St. Matthews, the young Aline grew up in her hometown, where she attended Andrew Chapel Methodist Church in Sandy Run and helped nurture her nine younger siblings. In the year following her graduation from St. Matthews High School,she moved to Cayce, where she attended Draughton Business School and joined Cayce United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, on May 27, 1933, she married Dewey L. Coggins. In the 1930s, she worked for an oil company, but when children came along, she became a stayathome mom for some years; and

Whereas, in 1952, Mrs. Coggins began a twentyfiveyear term of service with the Lexington County Library, during which shetouched the lives of many children in the Cayce area by promoting reading and sharing her love of books. After her retirement in 1977, she continued to work parttime for eight additional years; and

Whereas, as a woman of varied interests and talents, Aline Rucker Coggins was active in the Cayce Grammar School PTA and for many years was a devoted member of the Cayce Garden Club and the Susanna Wesley Circle of Cayce United Methodist Church, where she still regularly attends Sunday School; and

Whereas, in 2000, Mrs. Ruckerreceived her church’s Woman of the Year Award and in 2009was named Pioneering Woman of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs for South Carolina and the Midlands District. She is the longestservingmember of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of South Carolina, having been active for sixtyfour years, and she continues to be an inspiration to others; and

Whereas, having successfully raised two fine sons, Dewey M. Coggins and Harold R. Coggins, Mrs. Cogginsnow enjoys four grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolinaat the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and joins with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Aline Rucker Coggins of Lexington County on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and continued good health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Aline Rucker Coggins.
