4th Annual Biggs Cadillac Buick GMC Golf Classic
by Claude Milot
How many of you Albemarle Loopers can say you’ve attended a professional golf tournament on your migration north? Probably not many. Well, here’s your chance. Starting June 28 and ending July 1, Albemarle Plantation’s Sound Golf Links will host the 4th annual Biggs Classic featuring young golf professionals from all over the country. And it’s free. All you have to do is find a slip (it’s free, too) at Albemarle Plantation’s marina and walk right onto the course. In fact, you could even watch the action on the 16th green from the marina itself.
The Biggs Classic has come a long way. Three years ago Albemarle Plantation was approached by the NGA tour to host a tournament for its up-and-coming pros, most of them college stars hoping for a shot at the PGA. That first tournament attracted only 13 players, but their experience was so great, they spread the word: the course is a gem, the facilities are wonderful, and, best of all, we get to stay with residents who take us in like one of the family.
E-Golf Tour ran the tournament in 2015, then Swing Thought Tour in 2016, with over 100 pros are expected to compete this year, but with one big difference: Albemarle Plantation no longer needs a professional tour organization to run the tournament; it can do it all with over 200 volunteers. Best of all for the players, what was spent on tour organization overhead each of the first three years will now be added to the purse. What could be better than staying with a host family, home cooking, and hundreds of spectators cheering for their favorite players.
For you Loopers who have never been to the Albemarle Plantation Marina, you are in for a treat. Rated tops on the East Coast, the marina has it all: 30/50 Amp electric, fresh water, pumpout, diesel and gasoline on site, restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and mobile repair service. Also available to visiting boaters are restaurants, a swimming pool,WIFI, and shopping nearby. And, if you happen to come by outside of tournament days, you can rent a cart and test your golf skills on the best course in northeast North Carolina.
Come on by! We’d love to have you.
