WRITTEN REPORTS BELOW:
Annual Report to IaHIMA Membership President Liz Mayer, RHIA
I would like to thank all the IaHIMA members for allowing me the opportunity to serve as the IaHIMA 2015-2016 President. It has been a year of challenges for me, both personally and professionally, and being able to serve on the board with all the board members and liaisons that volunteer their time to our profession. A big thank you goes out to all of them for their contributions this year.
This year has been exciting for the membership and all HIM professionals with ICD-10 being implemented on October 1, 2015. The IaHIMA board represented the membership by meeting with our legislators and representatives to make sure another delay did not happen, which was successful.
In addition to planning and leading the board meetings, I participated in several surveys by AHIMA, In these surveys as well as the opportunities that I had to travel to AHIMA sponsored meetings, there seemed to be a common theme, difficulty in finding people to sit on the component state association boards, and declining attendance at meetings, by both attendees and vendors. IaHIMA is experiencing these same issues, so to be able to represent the membership and talk about how to improve these issues was a rewarding experience. As the board has conducted business, and aligning with the Strategic Plan for this past year, we have continued to focus on financials and improving the IaHIMA membership benefits. For those reasons, we have planned our first joint meeting with the HIMSS group, hoping to make a better experience for our membership by offering a wider variety of meeting topics as well as an opportunity to network with these professionals. The board has worked very hard on this new endeavor for the year, and we are looking forward to a successful meeting.
In regards to Strategic Planning, the board members were asked to review and give input for 2016, but hearing no input, and with the tremendous effort taken to plan this first joint meeting, the plan did not get updated this year. However, the plan for the prior year had many ongoing initiatives and these were updated, highlighted in yellow and are in a separate report for review.
Finally, all members please consider running for a position on the board or just attending the meetings. It is very rewarding to be able to make a contribution to your profession, and connect with other colleagues. Some of the connections I have made on the board have remained close friends, and I will always be thankful for the AHIMA events and meetings I was able to attend as a result of having a board position. Thank you and best wishes for the upcoming year.
Please see separate report for activities for past year during Presidency and strategic plan updates for 2016.

First-Year Director, Tina Hughes:
My responsibility as IaHIMA First Year Director is to obtain vendors or sponsors for our annual meeting. This year’s meeting is in partnership with Iowa HiMSS, so I attended many meetings with Iowa HiMSS in preparation for the annual meeting. I have worked with other IaHIMA Board members and several Iowa HiMSS Board and committee members to obtain sponsors for our annual meeting. With our two groups together, we have more sponsors than in previous years, which is exciting and helps us cover meeting expenses as well.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve you, the members of IaHIMA, as your First Year Director. I look forward to beginning my term as Second Year Director in June.
Tina Hughes, RHIT
Second-Year Director, Shari Good:
This past year has been full of so many new beginnings for us as a board. Within the role of Second Year Director I have been responsible for speakers and the annual meeting agenda. With the help of many people we have this done and we are ready to go for the Annual Meeting. I have listened to some webinars, learned new things about my job duties and have enjoyed working with each and every one of you. I have learned to step up and be more confident in my abilities and have gained the confidence that I needed with all of your help. I appreciate each and every one of you and am so glad that I was given the opportunity to run on this Board. I am looking forward to the meeting in Coralville and hope to see everyone there. Thank you. Shari Good

IaHIMA 2016 Annual Meeting Report
Legislative Liaison
Carrie Arens, MHIIM, RHIT
Much of 2015 was spent working towards the implementation of ICD-10 with calls and emails to the Iowa congressmen in Washington D.C., and participating in multiple webinars with AHIMA. All the effort was worth it when ICD-10 went into effect on October 1. Thanks to everyone who participated in those efforts!
On February 24, 2016 Michele Flattery and I attended the Iowa Hospital Association’s Hospital on the Hill Day to introduce IaHIMA to representatives who serve in Iowa. The Hill was very busy that day with issues surrounding the implementation of the Medicaid MCOs and we did not get to meet personally with many representatives. Upon return from that event, all the representatives were emailed the IaHIMA fact sheet.
In April 2016, Liz Mayer, IaHIMA President, and I went to Washington D.C. for the AHIMA Leadership Symposium and Hill Day. We were able to meet with aides from Senators Grassley and Ernst’s office and also from Representative King and Young’s office to discuss removal of language from the HIPAA Omnibus bill that prevents the creation of a National Patient Identifier for electronic health records and electronic data exchange. We also asked for documentation requirements for telehealth services to be the same as in person face to face visits and that HIM professionals be asked to the table to help discuss and create this legislation. We thanked the congressmen for their help in getting ICD-10 passed.
We continue to sell and distribute the IaHIMA legal manual that is available on the IaHIMA website. In 2015 we sold 39 manuals, and so far in 2016 we have sold 6 manuals.

Coding Liaison Report to the Membership – May 2016
By MariBeth Schneider Lane, MS, RHIA; AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as the IaHIMA Coding Liaison. I was involved in the following coding related activities throughout the 2015-2016 year.
1. Participated in the ICD-10-CM/PCS Grassroots webinars with AHIMA.
2. Contacted Senators and Representatives frequently about the need for ICD-10-CM/PCS Implementation.
3. Celebrated the implementation of ICD-10-CM/PCS on October 1, 2015.
4. Participated in the Coding Roundtable Coordinator webinars and conference calls.
5. Communicated information about the CEU extension for reporting ICD-10-CM/PCS CEUs by all AHIMA credentialed professionals to IaHIMA members.
6. Learned of the ICD-10 Next Steps Tool Kit from CMS. Some may find this information helpful so I am sharing the link here. https://www.cms.gov/Medicare/Coding/ICD10/Downloads/ICD10NextStepsToolkit20160226.pdf
7. Answered a few e-mails and phone calls from IaHIMA members about how to report the ICD-10 CEUs and issues they were having with the AHIMA website and the CEU Center.
8. Read a number of positive articles about the ICD-10 transition and how things are going well so far. Thank you to all who have taken a lead on preparing your organizations, training staff, dual coding, updating procedures, etc. This is a testament to what we can do together when we all work as a team with a united purpose.

Physician Office, Michele Flattery: I am Michele Flattery, Physcian’s Liason. I have been serving on the board in this position for approximately 4 years. During this role, I have been a speaker at previous state meetings. I work on updating board on new things that are going on in the physician setting. I have really enjoyed being a part of the board and working with this group. I have learned a lot and keep on learning as I go. I encourage everyone to become a part of this board.
I currently do not have a report to offer as far as updates. ICD-10 was the hot topic for most of the year and still continues to be a challenge for some of the physicians. I urge all to keep educating physicians on documentation, new codes, and being their support system.
