Summer Term 2011

Hawthorne Park Mural Project – Launch Day

On Saturday 30 April the Hawthorne Park Mural was launched with the help of the Mayor and Mayoress of Wyre, students from Millfield and representatives from Lancashire County Council, Wyre Borough Council, Young People’s Service and of course the artist, Gavin Renshaw.

Performing Arts Morning: Tuesday 17 May 2011

The assembly hall was filled with eager primary school pupils waiting to perform their chosen song or dance. Once again, there were some fantastic performances and Red Marsh invited many of the children on to stage to join in their line dance. The picture shows Mrs Palmer with her fantastic Ukulele Band from Royles Brook Primary School. There were more performances from Baines Endowed Primary School, Chaucer Primary School, Anchorsholme Primary School, Great Arley School, Stanah Primary School, Thornton Primary School and Northfold Primary School.

Gardening Club

This term we began the development of an allotment in the Environmental Garden with the help of some Year 8 students. What an amazing transformation! We are currently growing potatoes, beetroot, carrots, artichoke, lettuce, cabbage, peas, tomatoes, courgettes and purple sprouting broccoli. We meet after school every Wednesday. Many thanks to Harry Murphy, Tom Smith, Adam Strong and Matthew Swarbrick for their hard work and dedication to keep it looking so nice! Our neighbourhood cat, who we’ve nicknamed ‘Milly’, is also a regular visitor.

Top of the Wyre Quiz: Thursday 9 June

Congratulations to Northfold Primary School who, once again, won our annual Top of the Wyre Quiz,

followed closely by Anchorsholme Primary School and Baines Endowed Primary School

Well done to everyone who took part.

‘M’ Factor: Tuesday 21 June

This proved to be another successful evening of talent for our local primary schools. The judges were Mr Kilmurray and our senior students: Jessica Cunnah and Rachel Lumley. They had a very difficult decision but decided on Nikita Broadbent from Baines Endowed as the winner followed very closely by Neo Rice from Northfold Primary School and Harry Moulding from Manor Beach came third.

Health ‘Expo’ Event: Thursday 30 June

This was a first for Millfield and began for Year 9 students at 2.00 pm and it was then available from 3.15 pm for the community to have a look around. Many local health professionals and volunteers promoted their organisations and it gave everyone the opportunity to find out who is supporting our community.

Culture Awareness Day: Wednesday 13 July 2011

Culture Awareness Day proved to be a very eventful and thought provoking day for staff and Year 7 and 8 students. Thank you to John East from the YMCA in Blackburn and Gill Taylor who co-ordinated the visitors. They represented Eritrea, Zimbabee, Uganda, Sudan, Asia, Iran, Iraq and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We also welcomed students from Beardwood Humanities College in Blackburn who very quickly made some new friends. They all told some amazing stories about their lives; some were entertaining, informative and at times very moving.

PTFA

Our recent Summer BBQ in June was another successful evening of entertainment, stalls, activities and a prize raffle draw. Despite the weather letting us down once again it didn’t spoil the fun!

In September we will be having another ‘Bags2School’ collection so if you are having a clear out over the Summer holidays please bear us in mind and bring your donations into school. All unwanted clothing, soft toys, paired shoes and bedding are sent to developing countries and we receive 50p per kilo. We have raised £500 since we began taking part in this campaign. Thank you to staff, students and parents for your support during this year.

We are looking forward to meeting new Year 7 parents in September. If you want to be part of ‘Team Millfield’ please contact Mrs Murphy, the PTFA Secretary, at school for more information.

Diabetes UK: Cheque presentation [

Miss Jackson presented a cheque for £1,200 to Robert Edge from Diabetes UK. The money was raised from three events that the staff took part in. In May a team of 23 staff ran the Blackpool 10K event, Mr Grayston took part in the Great North Swim at Lake Windermere and staff took part in a sponsored bike ride in June.

Well done everyone!
