Job Purpose:
To undertake research on high power fibre lasers and amplifiers in accordance with the aims of the research project, under supervision of the Principal Investigator. To undertake activities to meet the goals of the project and to contribute to the research goals of the School.
Key Accountabilities/Primary Responsibilities:
- Conduct research onhigh-power fibre lasers and amplifiers operating in the infrared wavelength regime.
- Design and characterisation of rare earth doped fibres.
- Design, development and testing of rare earth doped fibre lasers and amplifiers.
- Develop theoretical models for fibre lasers and amplifiers.
- Interact with academic and industrial partners
- Develop fibre-based sources with performance specifications targeted at meeting the project goals.
- Report periodically on progress within research project, both orally and in writing.
- Publish results in leading scientific journals and at international conferences.
- Support the development of future grant proposals.
- Contribute towards the generation and protection of intellectual property.
- Carry out certain administrative tasks associated with the research project, for example, risk assessment of research activities, organisation of project meetings and documentation.

- Direct responsibility to Principal Investigator
- Work closely with other members of the research group and collaborate effectively with other groups both within and outside the University
- Supervise students if required
- Interact with external sponsors
Special Requirements:
- Knowledge of laser physics and rare earth doped fibre lasers is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of experimental techniques for characterising rare earth doped fibres is highly desirable.
- Experience in the design, development and testing of laser sources is highly desirable.
- May be required to travel nationally and internationally.
Criteria / Essential / Desirable
Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:
PhD in physics or engineering
Detailed knowledge of fibre lasers and/or solid-state lasers and optics with significant experience at postgraduate or equivalent level
Knowledge of spectroscopic characterisation techniques
Knowledge of nonlinear optics and nonlinear processes in fibres.
