All Saints, Year B 1 November 2015
Faces fascinate us. They tell us so much; whether people are happy or sad, in good health or ill, confident or distressed, relaxed or searching. Faces are so important that we are checking them all the time, almost unconsciously, from the first thing in the morning until we go to bed at night.
We see how important our faces are for our babies who respond instinctively to our smiles. We know they need lots of happy faces from parents and loved ones and our faces communicate the love and care necessary for their wellbeing. It is not just food and shelter they require. Without lots of hugs and laughter, smiling eyes and genuine affection, babies’ brains may fail to fully develop.
As we celebrate All Saints Day, we hope to one day be called to see God face to face. While this is our great hope, at the same time it is slightly intimidating. We dare to cling to this hope because Jesus insisted that this is God’s promise to us, of being caught up together in love and astonishing intimacy with God.
Yet the thought of facing up to God is more than a little frightening. How will we look to God? How can we wash our faces, as it were, and look presentable? Will we look good enough? Jesus kept reiterating that faith finally means entrusting our lives into God’s hands. He is trustworthy. Is it too fanciful to think of the whole of creation as a smiling God, showering us with gifts and filling us with wonder at the sheer exuberance of the universe and of life?
Each individual is a unique creation formed in the very image of God: how our maker must delight in accompanying us through life! Yet, the feast of All Saints reminds us that another life awaits, when we will be caught up in the embrace of God, and healed of the setbacks and wounds that we have suffered in our lifetimes.
The mystery of it all is how much God delights in us. Far from expecting a scolding from God sitting on a high throne, Jesus taught us to think of our Father in heaven running to greet us, his face beaming with joy as He welcome us into his home.
And not just us, but all our friends and relatives and the countless people who have gone before us. The gospels tell us that God loves us all without exception; so much so as to give his life in the person of Jesus, that we might truly believe in his total commitment to our eternal wellbeing. God has put a love song in our hearts.
