Energy,ModelingandSimulation,aswellasMeasurementTechnology.Wecooper-atewithresearchinstitutionsandindustrialcompaniesonanumberofnationalandinternationalresearchprojects.Theexpertiseoftheinstituteisalsoreflected
inthelargenumberofoperatedtestingfacilities,andintheutilizedmeasurementtechnologies.Themechanicalworkshop,theelectronicslaboratory,andthechemicallaboratoryarealsoessentialpartsofthe
experimentaloperationatourinstitute.
KeycompetencesregardingmodelingandsimulationareCFDsimulationsofcom-bustionandgasificationprocesses,entireprocesssimulations,burnerdesign,formoptimizationofbladeandsealgeometry,aswellasthesimulationofdepositionandslaggingtendencies.
Furthermore,aSiemensGuDSimulator(SPPA-T3000)canbefoundattheInstituteforEnergySystems,whichmakesitpossibletosimulatevariouspowerplantprocesses,andtotestthecontrolsystemofpowerplants.

Pressurizedentrainedflowreactor
Withastrongerpresenceofrenewableenergysourcesinthepowergrid,combinedcyclesandcoal-firedther-malpowerplantsaresubjecttomorefrequentandlargerloadchanges.Theevaporatorasacomponentinthermal
powerplantsanditsdynamicbehaviorisofgreatinterestforflexiblepowerplants.Toinvestigatetheevaporationprocessunderdynamicconditions,anevaporatortestrigisbeinginstalledattheinstitute.Furthertestrigsincludeanoxyfuelcombustionchamberandentrainedflowreactors.Theoxyfuelcombustionofcoalisoneofthethreemainresearchroutesforthedevelopmentofcoal-firedpower
plantswithCO2captureandstorage
(CCS)systems.Theaimistodevelopanddemonstratecombustionandboilingsys-temsonacommercialscale.CoalpowerplantsonthebasisofIGCCtechnology(integratedgasificationcombinedcycle)mainlyuseentrainedflowgasifiersandoffertheadvantageofhighefficiency
andtheopportunityforeffectiveCCS.Theprimaryobjectiveoftheworkattheinstituteistolaythenecessaryfounda-tionsforthelong-termdevelopmentoffuture,highlyefficienthigh-temperaturegasificationprocesseswithintegrated
hotgaspurificationandoptionalCCSfor
IGCCpowerplantsandprocessesforthedevelopmentofsyntheticfuels.Furtherprojectsinvestigatethedevelopment
ofacorrosionreductionconceptandthepotentialoftheSNCRprocess,inordertoreducetheemissionsofwastecombustionfacilities.TheSNCRresearchfocusesonammoniainjectioninsubstoi-chiometriczones.

Theuseofbiomassforelectricityandheatproductionhasmovedincreasinglyintofocus.Inthebiomassworkgroupthegoalistoinvestigateandtosolve
problemsandlimitationsthatariseinthethermaluseofbiomass.Keyaspectsarethereductionofemissionsandunburnedmaterials,traceelementslikesulfurandchlorinecompounds,aswellasalkalisandparticles.TogetherwithSuncoal
IndustriesGmbH,focusingontheprocessofhydrothermalcarbonization(HTC),theconversionofbiocharinanentrained
flowgasifierisinvestigated.Aprocedure
forthetreatmentandmethanationoftheproductgasfromabiomassgasifierisdevelopedaswell.Theprocessedgas
hastomeetthecriteriaforintegrationinto
thenaturalgasgrid.Furthermore,withintheframeworkoftheSOFCOMproject,theabilitytousesolidoxidefuelcells(SOFCs)asanefficientmeansofbiomass
generationincombinedcooling,heat,andpowerfacilitiesisinvestigated.Thefocusliesondecentralizedfacilitiesfortheuse
oflocallyproducedbiomass.

Modelingandsimulationofsolidfuelcon-versionplayanimportantroleinseveralprojectsmentionedabove,e.g.HotVeGas,RELCOMandNOxreduction.Computa-tionalfluiddynamic(CFD)simulationsareappliedinordertogainamoredetailedunderstandingofseveralcombustionandgasificationprocesses.Furthermore,entireprocesssimulationsaimatevaluating
thecompletepowerplantsystemandpossiblesynergies.Astheflexibilityofpowerplantsgetsintothefocusoftheoperators–inadditiontoefficiencyandeconomy–theinteractionofpowerplantprocessesduringdynamicoperation
isinvestigatedbymeansofdynamicsimulationsofpowerplants.Animprovedprocessunderstandinghelpstodevelopbetteroperatingstrategiesandoptimizedpowerplantconfigurations.Twodifferent
powerplanttypesareinvestigated:com-binedcyclepowerplantsandcoal-firedpowerplants.Alsotheeconomicuseofwasteheatisafocusofresearch.TheuseofwasteheatatlowtemperatureswithorganicRankinecycles(ORC)isexaminedattheInstitutebymeansofprocesssimulations.
