People on the Beach Literacy Reading/Listening Center Task Card
· The students, in small groups, sitting in a circle, will utilize the listening center to listen to the story while reading it. They will give attention to the following focus questions:
1. How was Herculaneum destroyed?
2. How do archeologists learn from skeletons?
· While reading the story the students will pause the CD player at the end of each page, when they hear the “chime” and the person holding the Good Readers skills card will respond to the selection they have just finished reading by using one of the skills of good readers that are listed on the card. They will then pass the card to the person on their left who will repeat the procedure after the next “chime”.
· When confronted with unfamiliar vocabulary the students will use the decoding skills they have learned in class: context clues, apposition, and word structure in order to gain understanding. If the students as a group are unable to decode the unfamiliar vocabulary word after attempting to utilize all three decoding skills, they can then consult a dictionary
