VARUN is working in 6 villages of (5 primary 1 secondary) with help from Asha-SV in Naugargh block, Chandauli dist. These villages are very remote surrounded by hills and dense forests with no presence of Govt. schools. VARUN is focusing on mental and physical development of children and youth through various programs like PT, music, painting, awareness on cleanliness, bal-panchayat and such activities.

In this session report,there were 3 meetings with teachers regarding educational progress, community activities, cleanliness, etc. which have been described in this document.

VARUN conducts monthly, quarterly and half yearly tests before the annual exam to measure the progress of students. Half-yearly exam was held between 15th -25thDecember, 2011 and results were declared in January. Children are utilizing library resources.

Events like Republic day, Independence day, Teachers day, Gandhi Jayanti are celebrated in all centers with help of all villagers with enthusiasm. Festivals like Deepawali and Dussehra were also celebrated.

Note: In class 9, there are 18 students attending as part-time students.

There are 232 children (121 boys and 111 girls). There are 63 children in Junior high school in which there are 22 children in class 8 and and 26 children in class 7. There are 15 students in class 6. On request from guardians and tutors class 9 is being held on voluntary basis. Teachers are teaching 18 students. Looking at the work of few, there are more who joined with teaching. Villagers are giving high importance to education and this has been possible because of all the hard work of volunteers.

At primary level, there are 142 children are from scheduled tribes, 26 from backward class, 1 from general class

Buildings of shiksha kendrashave been repaired, painted and restored. In Sukhdeopur, during rainy season, looking at the condition of the school, the platform was raised to a certain height so that rain water does not wet the floor.

On 8th November 2011 fifty students from Shahpur junior high school participated in a program organized by the ‘Art of living’ founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. This program was made possible with the help of children, teachers and the members of the organization.

Inspired by the hardworking and dedicated members of Asha, poor people in the area covered by Varun have been participating in programs to spread awareness for education as well as things like health, RTI, NREGA, farming, fertilizers, crops, deforestation, women empowerment, job opportunities, Panchayat, national pulse polio program etc to help the development of the region.

During the audit auditors discussed with teachers about the better ways of teaching using alternate learning and group learning techniques, instilling mannerism, taking evening classes etc. They also discussed other subjects like hindi, comprehension, English, science, mathematics and environmental studies.

Health Program – (April – December2011)

Health workshop was organized on April 14th & 16th, 2011 at Junior High School, Naugarh. Detailed knowledge about female health was provided in the workshop by Dr Aasif Jamaal & Mrs Asha Pandey (A.N.M.) with Asha workers and volunteers from the village.

Health camp was organized on Sep 15th & 16th, 2011 at Shahpur & Pathraur and on October 17th & 18th, 2011 at Hathini & Sukhdevpur. In the workshop, Dr Aasif Jamaal, P.H.C., Amdaha did the health examination of 475 children and villagers. Free medicines were provided for fever, eyes redness, itching, boils, strength, body aches, etc. Health camp helped the villagers save a lot of money and gain good health.

Sixteen workers are participating in National ‘Pulse Polio’ drive to make it successful. Our organization is helping the health department in this effort. Varun, with help of volunteers is working on dots, malaria, Jananai surakhsa Yojna (J.S.Y.), hydrosil, sterilization, etc under the health program. Under dots 11 patients were inspected, out of which 5 came out positive whereas out of 40 probable malaria patients 15 resulted positive. 21 pregnant women were helped under Janani Suraksha Yojna. Under this program, Rs 1400/- is granted by the department for getting the first & second baby delivered at the government hospital. Also, three patients of hydrosil were operated by the surgeon. 12 women were sterilized under sterilization program at Community Health Center, Naugarh. General patients are also treated in the hospital.

Mahatma Gandhi NationalRural Employment Guarantee Act(MGNREGA)
April – December 2011

07 trainings were organized in 07 villages under MGNREGA, in which 249 members participated. Around 300 pamphlets were distributed for its publicity. In the training, members were told about the MGNREGA and jobs done by various different departments. This is an effort to make villagers aware.

In all the villages under education center, unions and conferences of self-helpers villagers are being continuously told about the MGNERGA, so that labors can avail more and more benefits.

RTI (Right To Information)

April – December 2011

There were 4 trainig and 1 meeting held in 3 centers in which 109 women and 31 men with a total of 140 members have taken part in the program. Right to information is a right of the public with the help of which petition about information on any department can be filed and in 30-25 days, answer can be obtained. In meetings, there were particular points on which the discussions were conducted.

Gender Program

There were 10 workshops on topic of Gender in which 180 women and 199 men with 379 members have take part.

With the help of Gender program, villagers are being made ware of gender discrimination. People are providing their complete support. People are being made aware of problems being faced by women in the society.

On 1st May, 2011, Labor Day, there was an event held in Deodattpur with laborers and contract workers, in which problems faced by them were discussed.

On 6th June, Environmental Day, there was a program conducted with villagers on the topcs of how to have a healthy living, planting trees, keeping neighborhood clean and related topics were discussed. All this transformations are possible only when the people are made aware of these things. People were made aware about the importance of cleanliness by making them wash hands.

On 10th December 2011, human-rights day, in Sukhdeopur people were made aware in detail. People were made aware about their rights. In Shahpur, there were awareness programs on the topics of Right to education, women and children rights.

Women Empowerment Program

April-December 2011

There was a meeting held on organization and self-help group’s strengths and financial improvement were discussed. They are improving their financial status through daily work, bangles stores, bidi making, tent material, vegetable farming, agriculture and various other programs. For the strengthening of organization there were regular meetings organized and awareness programs are being conducted regularly. On 31st May, 2011, in Parsia 54 there was a training program held with women members. There have been monthly meetings on functioning of Women Federation discussing about how to strengthen the federation. In meetings one village is considered at a time and is discussion is on implementation of ideas; working on various programs of Panchayat and other departments. Dealing with various disputes with help of federation, streamlining of funds for better financial positioning of federation, etc.

Agriculture/Farming updates

April-December 2011-12

Crop has been good this year because of good rains during autumn season. Farming club had gathered sesame, maize, rice, etc during harvest season. Rabi crops (winter) plan is in discussion. There were 10 new clubs that were started in which NABARD, distinguished members of Krushi Vignan Kendra, UP Govt., Education department, Health department, etc had taken part in various programs and had given free consultation. Members from KVK had givne information about various farming clubs like – Janata, Mahima, Mahalakshima, Aryaman, Bharat, Sonani, Sangharsh, Universal, Khushbu, etc. and also given tips on various scientific and modern farming techniques, seed and also dealt with farming of vegetables, animal rearing and various employment opportunities have been discussed.

For maize crop’s yield improvement, 4 members attended ICAR conference in New Delhi through BHU, Varanasi. The knowledge gained is in the process of implementation. Keeping in mind of the problems of farmers, a club has been formed in which various problems are discussed. To improve the crop yield, members from BHU and other organizations have visited farms for surveying crops of tomatoes, chilies, onions, potatoes, garlic, etc. Farmers were given high quality seeds and were made aware of drip irrigation and created plots for helping them sell vegetables in market.

In vegetable farms, farming is being done byclub members, federation. Vegetables like tomatoes, chilies, onions, potatoes, garlic, etc are grown in lands of farmers. This year, 20 hectares of land had been sown with seeds this way.

Under tree planting program farm lands have been sown with seeds with help of forest department, panchayat, Award scheme, NGO, etc. This year 5 hectares of plantation has been scheduled for plantation. 16 farmers from 12 villages took part in planting 1200 seeds of guavas and gooseberry.

Farmers are being made aware of organic farming. In 10 villages there is an effort to improve drip irrigation, NADEP compost, wormi compost, green plantation, native plantation, etc. Farmers are harvesting this crop. This year 40kgs of kechua was sold at Rs.200/- for a total of Rs.8000/- profit and this is being utilized back into farming. Due to this health of farmers also is being improved visible.

Members of farming are taking part in Panchayat’s proceedings and their role is being finalized. With help of Award scheme there was a workshop held for farmers in which club members took part.

Between 1 and 14 September 2011, there were meetings in which farming has been discussed extensively with farmers. Farming melas, clubs, advanced farming practices, etc are few of the things that are covered in these meetings.

With animal rearing experts, sheep rearing, poultry, cattle breeding and rearing are being improved.On 30th December, 2011, 4 members from farming club attended conference organized by Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi.

On 6th Nov, 4 members have taken survey of the land and have given ideas to the farmers about how to improve the yield of the crops and about how to obtain good seeds from market at cheaper rates. There was stress given on tomatoes, chilies crops. Plant could be setup to start making sauce out of chili, tomatoes and could be a source of income.

Under BHU’s program, oil business is being given importance and under this sunflower and linseed’s seeds are being sown in the Naugarh block, Nagwa, Sonbhadra in fields of 24 farmers.

On 27th November, 2011, VARUN has started bee-keeping program in Nonavat village starting with 9 boxes. There is an effort to make as much involvement as possible from villagers because of which there is a financial growth for them.

VARUN is working towards networking of NGOs in which it is working with 5 NGOs to addresses various issues in the areas of :

  1. All organizations would work together and cooperate towards development
  2. Work collectively with division heads and workers on the ways and methods of execution of tasks.
  3. Spreading awareness amongst people about education and health for them to motivate and take the initiative.
  4. Letting the uneducated people know about their rights.
  5. Letting people know about their rights through the programs related rights and laws. Like women and children rights, RTI, labor laws, right to meals, right to land, right to health, etc.
  6. Work towards getting basic necessities of food, water, clothes, roads, electricity, water, etc.
  7. Encourage people to improve their basic financial conditions by teaching new trades.
  8. Taking advantage of all the programs of Govt. for the maximum benefit of villagers.
  9. Stressing and implementing the process of solving disputes through mutual settlements.
  10. Implementing modern farming techniques and modern seeds and making farmers more aware of the modern practices.

Case Study of Village Dobahi

This village is situated at about 12kms from the central Naugarh. Even today these people live between hills and travel on foot to reach their place. It is a very difficult passage. If someone falls sick, it is a huge difficult task to rush and get the patient to nearby hospital. This place is surrounded by water on 3 sides and one side is surrounded by hills. There are 14 Kharvar and 1 Lohar families. Main occupation is farming , animal rearing, forestry, labor, etc. In this village, with help of Asha-SV, VARUN has been working to spread education here from past 6 years. Apart from education, VARUN has been working in the fields of women empowerment, farming, self-help, farming clubs, MNREGA, RTI, gender, etc by giving information in these areas and enlightening them. Keeping in mind the welcoming nature of people, Sachiv and Saroj farming club along with teachers and guardians had a meeting and together with help of Shri Pyarelal (coordinator of Saroj farming club), Mr.Bhuvan Kumar (Teacher) villagers built a 4.7km road through the hilly regions, breaking down the rocks, etc. It took 35 days and the road was completed on 29th of October 2011. Today, even car can go to this village. After construction of this road, people are able to travel more easily.
