February 27, 2014, New Delhi: In line with the objective of making India the ‘skills capital of the world’, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in its first three years of operations has skilled 13,49,742 people and created a capacity to skill 7.5 crores people in the next 10 years. The 122 skilling ventures that NSDC has approved till date are operating in 358 districts through 1481 fixed and 1101 mobile centres across the country. To ensure that all the candidates are trained on industry defined standards, NSDC has approved 29 Sector Skill Councils, which have standardized 501 job roles in different sectors till date.
NSDC is also implementing the Udaan scheme targeted at the youth of Jammu and Kashmir under which 43 corporates have committed to train 61,113 candidates over the next 5 years. Till date 6061 candidates have been selected by 35 companies.
Speaking on the milestones being achieved by National Skill Development Corporation, Mr. S. Ramadorai (Chairman, NSDA & NSDC) said “NSDC has a multiplier effect on the country. The most important thing for us is to think and plan ahead and deliver on ground all the initiatives we have taken so far. If you see the skills development agenda of the government, skilling our youth, giving them employment and promoting entrepreneurship is absolutely critical. And there is a systemic national-level change that’s happening to catalyse and increase the number of skilled professionals.”
“NSDC TV commercial which is being launched this month is on the same lines of communication and will enthuse the youth of our country to join the skilling program and help transform their life.” he further added.
In the last general budget the Union government had announced the ‘National Skill Certification and Monetary Reward Scheme’, which is being branded as STAR (Standard Training Assessment & Reward) under which NSDC was to skill 10 lakh youth in the first year. The scheme was launched by the Honourable Finance Minister Shri P. Chidambaram on 16th August 2013. It was run on a pilot basis for the first month and was subsequently launched across the country on 16th September, 2013. In the first five months the scheme has already enrolled 2,20,686 candidates of which 1,06,564 have completed training with 456 training partners in 3301 centres across the country. NSDC has also launched the first skilling debit card in the country and have made vocational loans available for skilling.
The government has also created a framework called National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) to ensure that the levels of skills imparted across the country are world class. NSQF aims to synergize all the skilling initiatives of different ministries via a single framework.
