Classroom Expectations

(Stearns/Della Camera)

I am pleased that your child is in my math class this year. With your help and support, I look forward to

many successes with your child. Part of that success will depend on your child’s self-discipline in the classroom. I expect every student to be responsible for a positive learning environment.

Student responsibilities

  1. I will use my passing period for drink and restroom breaks and be in my seat before the bell rings.
  2. I will come to class every day with ALL my supplies in my binder for math class. This includes my planner, completed homework, math book, wide-ruled notebook paper, graph paper,a pencil sharpened before the tardy bell rings (not mechanical), a REDgrading ink pen, a calculator and any other supplies my math teacher has asked me to bring for that class period.
  3. I will come in with a positive attitude and ask questions when I do not understand a concept.
  4. I will use pencil only on all math papers and keepmy papers in my binder until teacher notification.
  5. I will always be respectful during classroom lessons by listening and following directions. I will also be respectful of other students who have questions.
  6. I will be on task at all times.
  7. I will determine all missed work due to an absence and complete it on time.
  8. I will let my parents and teacher know if I am getting behind or need help.
  9. I will spend at least 15 minutes every night at home working on my math even if I do not have any written homework. I can always review the concepts covered in class using notes, Math XL or the text website.
  10. I will prepare for quizzes and tests and do my own work to the very best of my ability.
  11. I will only use my phone or device for math curriculum activities, as permitted by my teacher.

Parent responsibilities

  1. I will ensure my child has completed his or her homework and is prepared for class.
  2. I will do my best to make sure my child has a quiet place to study and necessary materials.
  3. I will make sure that my child is reviewing concepts using notes, MathXL or the text website at least 15 minutes every night even if he/she does not have any written homework.

Teacher responsibilities

1.I will align the essential course outcomes with the Missouri Learning Standards required of our students.

2.I will identify the prerequisite knowledge and skills students need in order to master the essential learning of the course and each of its units.

3.I will do my best to support your child in their academic growth.

4.I will do my best to make sure that your child feels safe in my class.

Instruction

In the Francis Howell Mathematics Curriculum students will develop an understanding of important mathematical ideas through problem-solving and applying what they have learned to new situations. These mathematical practices are:

MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

MP2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

MP3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

MP4: Model with mathematics.

MP5: Use appropriate tools strategically.

MP6: Attend to precision.

MP7: Look for and make use of structure.

MP8: Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on practice (classwork and homework*),unit formatives**and unit summatives.

*Homework is graded as follows:

2 / 1 / 0
ALL problems with ALL
work shown / More than half of all problems with work shown / -Answers only
-Work missing
-Less than half completed

*Writing “I don’t know” or “?” does not count as an answer. “I didn’t know how to do it” does not excuse you from trying to answer the problem. Look back at your examples, notes, on-line resources and make an attempt to solve the problem mathematically.

*You must have your homework assignment on your desk at the beginning of class in order to receive credit.

**If a student earns less than a 70% on a unit formative, it should be redonewithin a week of the quiz being returned to the student. Only problems missed should be reworked on a separate piece of paper and stapled to the front of the original formative. The two grades will be averaged in the grade book.

Absent Work Policy

The student handbook policy allows each student one day for each day absent from school to make up their work. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain work missed and turn it in by the required time limit. This is easy to do as the information can be found daily on the homework website, including worksheets as needed. If a students is absent on the day of an assessment, they should expect to take that assessment upon their return. Parents, please feel free to contact me, preferably by email, if you have any questions or concerns.

On-Line Resources

Students have access to the following on-line textbook resources at any time:

  • Virtual Nerd (video explanations) – this is also a free app that can be downloaded
  • MathXL (practice problems)
  • Interactive examples (examples from class to watch again)
  • Games (to increase fluency)

*An additional free app is the Pearson Bounce Pages App (allows students to scan the textbook for additional support)
