Appointment of:Consultant in Palliative Medicine

1. Qualifications /
- MB BS or Equivalent
- Full GMC Registration
- Inclusion of the Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine.
- MRCP, MRCGP or Equivalent
- Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations
- Higher degree e.g. MSc, MD or equivalent
2. Experience/ Clinical Skills /
- Fully trained in Palliative Medicine, including experience of working in a community setting
- Clinical Knowledge and Expertise: Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence based practice
- IT Skills, ability to use web browser, excel, word, outlook and computer based patient record systems
- Willingness to develop skills and experience in areas of interest within the community setting
- Ability to work sensitively within a multicultural community
- Able to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
- Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest
- Experience in providing support and supervision to other staff groups
3. Motivation /
- Personal integrity and reliability. Willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to motivate and develop both medical and non medical staff.
- Commitment to further develop the post and the service provided
4. Management /
- Able to lead a Multidisciplinary team when required
- Willingness to supervise junior doctors and other member of the multidisciplinary team
- Willingness to undertake service development and evaluation of thenew Integrated Community Palliative Care Team
- Willingness to contribute to the further development and sustainability of the community palliative care team, including through engagement with the commissioners, independent hospice sector and other local providers
- Knowledge of clinical governance issues
- Capacity to manage/prioritise time and information effectively; capacity to organise own workload,
- Flexibility
- Evidence of management experience
- Management training on an accredited course
- Understanding of wider health agenda, modern NHS and the independent hospice sector
- Evidence of leadership skills
5. Audit/Clinical Effectiveness /
- Experience in, and commitment to medical audit
- Practical experience of designing and implementing protocols and guidelines and willingness to organise relevant audit activities
- Completion of formal courses in audit
- Published Audit or service development project
6. Research /
- Ability to appraise research critically
- Willingness to participate in research studies with support from the Palliative Care Research Teams
- Evidence of recent research and development activity
- Publications in recognised peer-reviewed journals on subjects relevant to Palliative Medicine
- Presentations at national/international meetings
7. Communication Skills /
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are of a high quality to enable effective communication with patients and colleagues
- To be empathic and sensitive; capacity to take others perspectives and treat others with understanding
- Able to teach others about communication skills
8. Teaching /
- Experience of, and commitment to delivering high quality multi-professional teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Willingness to develop new approaches to teaching
- Post Graduate qualification in medical education
- Appraisal and assessment skills
- Accredited to teach Advanced Communication Skills
9. Employment Checks and Other Criteria /
- Satisfactory health clearance
- Satisfactory enhanced Criminal Records Bureau /DBS check
- A full driving licence with access to a car. This post would not be considered suitable for those requiring public transport because of need to visit patients in the large, often rural, local area.
