WELCOME TO THE CYC MENS ARTISITC GYMNASTICS PROGRAM

Welcome to the Cheltenham Youth Club MAG Program. Cheltenham Youth Club was founded in 1956, and has since provided a range of activities and sporting pursuits for the active youth of our community.

The CYC MAG aims are:

  • To provide a wide range of gymnastic classes, to suit all gymnastic abilities, from beginner to International Gymnastics.
  • To provide an active, safe and healthy environment where all gymnasts can achieve, and learn correct gymnastics skills.
  • To provide as many opportunities as possible for gymnasts to perform through a variety of ways. [ie: Competitions, Displays, Parent Viewing Days]
  • To provide opportunities for growth and learning, being challenged and to succeed.
  • To improve physical and mental well being.
  • And above all, to have fun while developing gymnastic abilities.

The philosophy of the CYC MAG Program is best summarized in the following six statements:

  • Safety - Keeping children, their families, and their coaches safe must always remain priority one.
  • Respect - Respect must be unconditional: respect for the kids, for their families, for the coaches, for the programs, and for the facility.
  • Cooperation and Teamwork - CYC is about everybody... and the vision is about a community... both can only be achieved in an environment of cooperation and teamwork.
  • Open Communication - Cooperation, trust, teamwork, and learning can only be achieved when there is open, honest, and clear communication between everybody involved.
  • Growth and Learning - Growth and learning, being challenged and succeeding, accomplishing new things, improving physical and mental fitness, and achieving goals is what we're all about - that's what makes people happy and programs successful.
  • Fun - If we're not having fun, then we're doing something wrong... smiles, greetings, humor, praise, and enthusiasm are contagious... everybody should be spreading those around. Endless activity, creativity, and variety are essential.

MAG APARATUS

There are six MAG apparatus. They are: Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar.

Floor Exercise:

This exercise is pure acrobatics, alternating between powerful tumbling series and the composure necessary for balance and strength elements. The gymnast endeavors to display virtuous rebound height, whilst connecting the elements of their routine with gymnastic artistry.

Pommel Horse:

Routines on this apparatus are characterized by circular movements of the body with legs together (circles) and pendulous swings with the legs separated (scissors). Gymnasts also show a spectacular combination of these skills called flairs. Throughout the routine the gymnast performs smooth combinations of these movements, turning and traveling along the horse. Utilizing all parts of the horse, while maintaining an extended body line and straight legs.

Still Rings:

This apparatus is known for it's difficulty of strength and swinging elements. The free moving quality of the rings makes it difficult to remain stationary during held elements, where any movement of the rings incurs a penalty. During his performance, the gymnast should demonstrate control, strength and balance in the presentation of forward and backward swings and strength holds parts. The gymnast's dismount allows him to show aerial abilities prior to landing.

Vault:

The gymnasts during their twenty-five metre approach to the vault must develop the necessary power to complete all their aerial skills before landing. Upon take-off from the board the gymnast explosively propels himself upwards, dynamically pushing off the table to generate greater height and distance in the second phase of flight . This enables a higher level of acrobatic skill and extension to be performed prior to a stable landing.

Parallel Bars:

A predominately swinging apparatus, that is interspersed with only a few held or strength elements. Swings are completed above and below the bars and consist of acrobatic flight elements, changes of direction and swing types. The gymnast's routine will end with a dramatic dismount from the side or end of the bars.

Horizontal Bar:

This is a very spectacular apparatus, largely due to the acrobatic releases and re-grasp flight elements. The routine is based on swinging parts without stops, and includes extended forward and backward giant swings, combined with near bar elements changes of direction and grip, as well as the release and re-grasp movements. The dismounts from the bar allows the gymnast to show his acrobatic talents and landing prowess.

COMMUNICATION PATHWAYS

Parent

CYC Office

MAG ProgramHead Coach

Manager

Parents, your line of communication begins with the CYC Office, not the coach. If a parent wishes to talk with the coach, they must go to the CYC Office and schedule an appointment to see the MAG Program Manager or the Head Coach. Then the Office will determine if the matter is best suited for the MAG Program Manager or the Head Coach.

Parents must NOT:

  • Enter the gym area with the exception of the spectators area and toilet facilities. Under no circumstances should a parent enter the gym area.
  • Approach the coach during training. The coaches are involved with a number of athletes needing their time during training.

Registration Fee

This is an annual fee payable upon booking your child into class to cover the 2009 year. This registration fee comprises of your club membership along with a compulsory insurance levy. The insurance levy is set by the Australian Gymnastics Federation. It is a compulsory fee and is non-refundable and non-transferable to another person. If your child joins CYC in term 4, a reduction in the registration fee will be given.

General Gymnastic Classes

If your child is enrolled in these classes, you will be invoiced for four (4) terms per year. The terms run for a period of approx 10 weeks each (these are usually in line with the public school term). The term dates for 2009 are as follows:
