MARKETING MANAGER
The Canterbury Festival, Kent’s International Arts Festival, is an annual multi arts event showcasing the best in local, national and international performance. While the Festival takes place over 2 – 3 weeks in late October, the team is employed year-round in community arts activity, building audiences and developing partnerships to promote the arts in Kent.
The Festival promotes approx. 250 events annually selling £300,000 of tickets. It aims to engage with upwards of 65,000 people through free and ticketed events. The marketing budget is approximately £60,000.
We are seeking an experienced marketing manager to run and further develop the Festival’s marketing, sales and communication functions.Responsibilities include design, copywriting of print materials, website/digital development, online/social media and e-marketing, budgeting and achieving box office and advertising income targets. The role involves contributing to strategy and delivery of events nightly during theFestival, and on occasional evenings and weekends throughout the year.
Applicants must have previous marketing experience in an arts, charitable, or related environment. Knowledge of the arts is desirable. They must possess a keen eye for detail, basic design skills; excellent copywriting, oral communication and the ability to present in public, managerial, budgetary and networking skills. Accuracy and organisational ability are of paramount importance, and experience of box office systems highly desirable.
The ideal start date is mid-February 2018.

Job Description MARKETING MANAGER
Reports to The Festival Director with task reporting to the Board of Trustees
Responsible for Marketing Assistant (appointed on a temporary basis each year)
Purpose of the role To develop the successful brand and implement strong marketing strategies to build audiences, maximise ticket sales and other income. To contribute to the strategy and on-going work of the Festival year-round, To manage press, PR, publications (digital and print), market research, evaluation, maintenance and analysis of data and archive.
Key responsibilities include
Promotional materials
- All copywriting, design, production and distribution of the Festival brochure, nightly programmes, posters, flyers, street publicity and promotional materials for the year-round activity of the organisation.
- Management of publicity resources from all artists.
- Creating digital media content (photography and film)
- Designing and developing digital marketing campaigns
- Social media campaigns (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube)
- Designing and circulating of eNewsletters
- Upkeep and re-design (as required) of website content
- Management of digital marketing activity for several partner organisations
Press and PR
- Generating a year-round programme of media coverage (national, international and regional), including press, television and radio. Maintaining updated media lists.
- Designing, implementing and evaluating marketing and PR campaigns appropriate to the Festival’s activities to widen and consolidate audiences.
- Organising launches, meetings and networking opportunities year round.
Sales
- Managing the Festival’s relationship with its box office provider.
- Designing seating plans for Festival venues, translating programme information into sales format.
- Setting pricing, group sales and special offers to ensure that income reaches target annually.
- Management of Festival audience data, mailing lists and e-lists.
- Managing VIP ticketing, seat-numbering and venue signage.
Strategic and tactical management
- Overseeing or undertaking research and evaluation projects to monitor the effectiveness of the marketing effort to better the Festival’s understanding of its audiences.
- Delivering an annual Marketing Plan and evaluating performance against it.
- Working with stakeholders, tourism agencies and others to promote the Festival within its Kent/Canterbury context to increase the number of visitors during the Festival.
- Contributing to the Festival’s overarching strategy.
- Researching viable alternative suppliers for box office services.
Budget management
- Working within and controlling the marketing budget to achieve maximum cost effectiveness in all areas.
- Managing the Festival’s advertising budget to place and sell advertising space appropriately.
Line management
- Managing the Marketing Assistant, interns and placement students as required.
Events support & delivery
- Contribute to the delivery of Festival events including, but not limited to, Front of House management, artist liaison, steward management, ticketing support and VIP hosting.
General
- Make an active contribution to the team-wide goals and activities that form part of the successful development of Canterbury Festival as an organisation.
- Managing and developing the Festival archive.
- Providing marketing assistance to external organisations, working in partnership with the Festival.
- Attending meetings of the Board, Council, Friends and sub-committees as required.
- Providing university lectures and presentations covering the marketing of the Festival, as required.
- Any other reasonable duties commensurate with this role’s skills and responsibilities, as requested and directed by the Festival Director.

Essential
Attainment – Graduate calibre
Work related experience
- At least 2 years experience of working in a busy arts or related marketing environment
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills, including attention to detail, and keeping to deadlines, with a proven ability to prioritise a large workload
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong understanding of digital marketing
- Experience of budget management
- Good copy writing skills and strong graphic sense
- Experience of working with press and media
- Excellent IT skills – advance knowledge of MS package and Photoshop
- Knowledge of the marketing aspects of computerised box office systems
- Experience of providing customer care and event management

SUMMARY OF TERMS MARKETING MANAGER

Salary £25,000 - £30,000 dependent on qualifications and experience.
Benefits Contributory stakeholder pension.
HoursThe current post-holder has worked full-time (typically 35 hours per week) but we would also consider more experienced candidates who believe they could fulfil the role by working part-time or flexible hours for part of the year.
The busiest times for the post holder are from April to July, and September to end November when full time working will be required.
There will be occasional additional evening and weekend work.
Extra hours will be required especially during the Festival period to fulfil the responsibilities of the post.
Holiday entitlement 25 days plus UK Bank Holidays and any discretionary office closure. Leave must be taken at times appropriate to the responsibilities of the post, and never during the Festival period.
