Language Arts 2

Class Summary:

Language Arts 2 builds off of everything you have learned in LA1. We will be studying all the aspects of language: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.

Our anchor texts this semester include Animal Farm andRomeo and Juliet. We will also have units focusing on Media Literacy and Poetry. Every major unit will include one summative writing assignment (essay).

Skills and Goals:

As we progress through the semester, we will be working to improve your close and critical reading skills as well as your writing and discussion skills.

Grammar concepts and review will be discussed every day during bellwork. Every other week, we will have binder checks and grammar quizzes to assess your progress. There are no retakes for these, but you may correct your quiz mistakes for half credit.

Class Expectations:

  1. Come to class on time, prepared with all necessary materials.
  2. Be respectful to everyone and everything
  3. Be an active learner – participate!
  4. Be a good listener.
  5. The teachers dismiss the class – not the bell!

Required Materials (every day):

**Due to the large number of students this year, you will not be assigned a LA textbook. We have a class set available for use as well as several you may check out (to make up absent work, study, etc.) on a daily basis. A majority of our readings are also available online. **

Grading Policy:

We follow the school’s policy of 80% Summative (tests, essays, projects) and 20% Formative (classwork, homework, participation). Assignments will be turned in complete and on time. With teacher approval, assignments may be accepted late – for reduced credit.

Extra credit assignments will be assigned periodically throughout the semester but are only available to those students with no missing assignments.

Any copying of classmates’ assignments or plagiarism will result in a ZERO.

The most important thing to understand is that Mrs. McGladdery and Ms. Erhardt do NOT give you grades. You EARN your grades through your own hard work and effort!!
