INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA PRODUCTION:
THE PATH TO DIGITAL MEDIA PRODUCTION
FOURTH EDITION
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE USE OF THE TEXT
The concept behind the creation of this book is a culmination of the combination of professional and academic experience of the authors. The text leads the student from an understanding of the production process and the variations in production technologies through the organization of the members of the staff and crews used in media production. Each level of production responsibility from producers to editors, including graphics, animation and special effects is described as a segment of the entire process. This edition includes emphasis on the changing importance of understanding distribution and exhibition as a first-step in the production process. This may be a new concept, but the rapid changes in the delivery of media programs necessitates a clear understanding of how a production will reach an audience before the production is finalized.
Depending on the time allowed for a course and the concentration of that course, individual chapters may be used out of the order in the text. Each chapter can stand on its own. Some courses prefer to start with the hands-on production chapters and then include others as they fit the curriculum and time allowed. Some chapters may appear to be unnecessary or too long and detailed for a specific class. Omitting those chapters will not destroy the over-all effectiveness of the text.
This text acts as a reminder that all media production technologies are based on analog theories and operations. Light and sound are both analog waveforms. The human eye and ear cannot translate digital information unless it is converted back to an analog form. This text has concentrate on the latest digital theories, technologies, and production techniques to provide the best mix of information that students need to be exposed to in order to reach a full understanding of the production process in the rapidly changing digital world.
SUGGESTED EXAMINATION MATERIALS
The test questions, essay topics and mathematic problems are not intended to offer a set of comprehensive testing materials. They are offered as examples of suggested questions, essay topics, and math problems. The test questions offered are True-False, fill in blank, multiple-choice and solve a math problem. The essay topics may be used as offered, or as a suggestion for a more specific test question. The math problems are listed with their problem-solving formulas. Further explanations of solving the problems are shown in the chapters where the theories are first introduced.
The authors welcome suggestions, criticism, and of course a compliment or two, but we realize no text is perfect and we look for feedback and response from those of you who use this book in the classroom. Please feel free to let us know how you feel about your work.
