2017 Save the Date Notice

Following is a breakdown of the three summer events sponsored by the DHS Independent Living Program (ILP). The ILP sponsored events are FREE. Youth must be in foster care or former foster youth receiving voluntary ILP services.

Native Teen Gathering

DHS-ILP is partnering with both the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Native Wellness Institute (NWI) to host this year’s Native Teen Gathering. New this year will be a canoe trip and history of how the Grand Ronde tribe used canoes for hunting and gathering! Horses are planned again this year.

Dates: July 10 – 13 (Monday – Thurs)

Registration: Space for 50 youth (forms available by June 1st)

Location: Grand Ronde Tribal Grounds, Grand Ronde, OR

Ages: 14 – 20 years old, self-identifies as Native American

DREAM Conference

DHS-ILP ispartnering with Polk Youth Services, Inc., to hostthe DREAM Conference. The conference is focused on preparing and planning for post-secondary career, education and training. This is sure to be an excellent event, including a Career, College & Resource fair!

Dates: July 24 – 27 (Monday – Thursday)

Registration: Space for 100 youth (forms available by June 1st)

Location: Western Oregon University, Monmouth

One Day Option: Tuesday, July 25 – College, Career & Resource Fair

Ages: 16 – 20 years old, interested in learning about career/educ. options

Annual ILP Teen Conference

DHS-ILP will once again bepartnering with FosterClub to hostthe Annual ILP Teen Conference. This conference will focus on well-being and include a high ropes course, wilderness hike, swimming, and other well-being activities.

Dates:August 21 - 24 (Monday – Thursday) Note, delayed due to snow days

Registration: Space for 100 youth (forms available by June 1st)

Location: Camp Arrah Wanna, Welches, OR 97067

Ages: 14 – 20 years old, if not in ILP, must have caseworker or other person attend for supervision purposes

Note: Volunteer chaperones are always needed for each event. If you are over age 21 and interested in assisting with supervision during the events, please let me know and I will connect you to the event coordinator. DHS caseworkers may chaperone, please obtain permission from your supervisor. Additional information and registration forms will be issued as they become available. Camp To Belong (CTB) Northwest

CTB reunites brothers and sisters who are placed in separate foster, adoptive or kinship homes through this one of a kind Summer Camp Program. CTB provides participants with an opportunity to rebuild those sibling connections that may have been lost or weakened through their foster care experience.

Note: ILP sponsors 10 youth who meet the ILP eligibility criteria. Work with your caseworker to make referrals.

Summer Jobs Program

We will be able to support up to 100 foster youth or ILP enrolled former foster youth to obtain summer employment. Details will follow as soon as they are available. Please contact your local Workforce Innovations and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Providers to advise them of your youth’s interest.

Surfing Lessons

ILP is partnering with Oregon Surf Adventures and Alchemy Consultation & Training Services to bring this exciting opportunity to foster youth. Youth will be suited up in wetsuits, be provided safety instructions and risk awareness orientations before ever entering the water.

Capacity: 3 sessions of 25 youth (total of 75 youth)
