The Opportunity:
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)has an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer in the OlympicRegion MaterialsOffice. The Assistant Materials Engineer will assist in providing leadership, management, and engineering oversight to a team of engineers and technicians who provide technical advice to the Region's maintenance, design, and construction offices in the areas of pavement design, geotechnical design, and materials testing.

This position will perform the following work:
- Assist the Materials Engineer in managing the daily operations of a materials engineering office of nine employees or more.
- Prepare engineering documents including surfacing reports and geotechnical recommendation bearing a Professional Engineer's seal.
- Ensure statewide and Regional inspection training goals are met.
- Work with Maintenance managers to provide coordinated and effective pavement maintenance and repair strategies.
- Collaborate with Program Management and Maintenance to develop a pavement preservation strategy for the Olympic Region.
- Reviewing scoping packages, project PS&Es and developer projects for accuracy and adherence to WSDOT policies and procedures.
- Provide direction and make timely, effective decisions to deliver assigned projects successfully.
- Ensure that the P-1 program is correctly prioritized and managed to maximize lane miles preserved per dollar spent.
- Ensure that the Region Materials Lab prepares engineering documents that meet WSDOT policy.
- Foster safe working environments by ensuring employees are trained, use proper PPE, and follow safety protocols.
An ideal candidate for this position will have:
- A Professional Engineer license in the State of Washington.
- One (1) year of experience in geotechnical engineering and/or pavement design OR two (2) years of progressively responsible experience as a licensed professional engineer in construction or design of highways, bridges, and related structures.
- Two (2) years of demonstrated and progressively responsible managerial/supervisory experience.
- A strong engineering background.
- Strong skills in establishing plans and setting goals that support the overall program strategy/results.
- Ability to work closely and effectively with regulatory and local agenciesand others to ensure projects are delivered successfully.
- Excellent and effective communication skills both written and verbal, to clearly communicate with employees and the public.
- Valid driver's license.
