Opening
Personal Experience Continuum Exercise / Review the statements in the continuum exercise and choose the questions that you would like to use with your students. The left is strongly disagree. The right is strongly agree. Students should stand where they are on that continuum.
Continuum Exercise
- I feel respected by staff and faculty at UConn.
- I feel welcomed by American students in my classrooms.
- I feel welcomed by American students in my dorm.

Primary Content
Academic and Cultural Transition / Expectations for Students
Topics should include:
- What it means to “participate” in a class (discussion or presentations)
- Critical thinking
- Citations (to be discussed in future weeks)
- “Well-rounded student” - Expectations that students get involved in activities/leadership, not just study
Contacting a Professor
Discuss why/when to contact a professor. Remind them that professors are a useful resource for professional connections, but only if they cultivate a relationship with the professor. Just taking a class with a professor isn’t enough for the professor to know them.
Put up bad email. Ask students in small groups to rewrite the email and share with the whole class.
Review the components of a successful email.
Academic Presentations
- Modify the Oral Presentation PP as needed for your class. / Students will work to unpack one of these key American academic expectations.
Closing / Pass out Exploring Campus Resources assignment and review expectations.
Circulate Dairy Bar selection form. [once collected, please complete request spreadsheet and send to Vanessa Licowski -
Assignment
Involvement Fair / Assign Involvement Fair Part A (if you class is before Wednesday).
Group A Presentation / Students will identify at least three campus organizations that interest them.
