Position:ICRC Events and Online Officer

Start date: 1st January 2013

Duration: Two year, extendable contract

The ICRC Mission in the UKis looking for an Events and Online Officer to join its team to bolster its communications efforts and the organisation's voice on humanitarian policy. The role will develop theInternational Committee of the Red Cross's web and social media presence in the UKand help organise a programme of external meetings that promote the ICRC's policies and expertise.

The ICRC is a neutral, independent and impartial organisation whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC leads the international relief activities conducted by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in situations of armed conflict. It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening international humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.

The ICRC's global headquarters are in Geneva and its UK mission handles relations with the British and Irish governments, networking and influencing in London, Belfast and Dublin and profile raising with British and Irish-based media. The ICRC also enjoys a strategic partnership with the British Red Cross Society

Scope of Position

The ICRC Events and Online Officer will be an integral part of a small communications team in the London office. He/She will delivera programme of external events that includeshosted debates and discussions and events jointly-staged with other organisations. The successful applicant will also assist in the development of a vibrant web presence for the ICRC in the UK. This will involve the management of the local web platform and the commissioning, design, production and handling of relevant content (eg video, audio, photo galleries).

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Delivery of a diverse events programme for the ICRC in London and Belfast,inclusive of academic workshops, photographic exhibitions and public lectures, and covering all aspects of organisation, from initiation to participation and logistics.
  • Under the guidance of the Spokesperson, develop the ICRC's electronic presence in the UK, through web design, platform management and content generation. Commission, produce and manage the delivery of web content, including posts, galleries, audio clips and video. Where appropriate, using multimedia skills, self-cover stories for local web use. Expand ICRC UK's active social media work. Liaise with ICRC HQ as required
  • Help manage the outreach work of the Mission, including the planning of attendance at external events, speaking opportunities and conferences. Facilitate visits by ICRC experts to participate in humanitarian policy discussions.
  • As part of the communications team, assist in the ICRC's engagement with civil society, the media, government and academia to further understanding of ICRC policies and programmes.
  • Contribute to the London Mission's work on humanitarian policy, including ad hoc research, event reporting and analysis.
  • Work with the British Red Crosswhere required on key joint events and initiativesas part of the ongoing partnership between BRC and ICRC.
  • Other duties may be required to ensure the smooth running of a small but very busy team.

Person Specification

The chosen candidate will have suitable and solid experience in a relevant field in which they were able to demonstrate the organizational, online and multimedia skills appropriate to this position. A university degree is necessary, with training in media, online and communication skills advantageous. Candidates must be able to demonstrate awareness and interest in issues of conflict, humanitarianism and international affairs.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently and responsibly, deliver to deadlines, perform under pressure and be able to handle confidential and sensitive information.Experience working with UK political, policy and/or media institutions is an asset.

Excellentinterpersonal skills, ability to work well with a small team, and a good sense of humour are essential.

Candidates need to be legally able to work in the UK.
