PLASTIC-LAMINATE-CLAD ARCHITECTURAL CABINETS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 SUMMARY

A.Section Includes:

1.Provide custom plastic laminate faced wood casework and related countertops, scribe strips, filler panels, and special construction for casework where noted on Drawings.

2.Provide plastic laminate faced countertops and related back and side splash.

3.Provide locks for casework doors and drawers where noted.

4.Provide boxes and conduit for electric power and communications systems within casework where noted.

a.Coordinate sizes and installation locations of items to be installed within casework with Electrical Drawings and with Project Electrical Contractor.

b.Provide a pull wire within conduit installed in casework for use by Electrical Contractor for installing wiring.

5.Provide cutouts for sinks to be installed in countertops.

B.Work By Other Contractors:

1.Mechanical:

a.Mechanical Contractor to furnish and install sinks and related faucets, and traps noted to be installed within casework.

2.Electrical:

a.Electrical Contractor shall provide wiring within conduit which has been built into casework under this Section, make connections to electrical power and communications systems and complete installation of receptacles and other electrical items within casework.

SECTION 06 41 16

1.02 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A.Design Requirements:

1.ADA Requirements: The following special requirements shall be met, where specifically indicated on Drawings as “ADA”, or indicated by a General Note. To be in compliance with Federal Register Volume 56, No. 144, Rules and Regulations:

a.Countertop Height: With or without cabinet below, not to exceed a height of 34” above finished floor, at a surface depth of 24”.

b.Kneespace Clearance: Not less than 27” above finish floor, and 30” clear span width.

c.12” deep shelving, adjustable or fixed: Not to exceed a range from 9” above finish floor to 54” above finish floor.

d.Wardrobe Cabinets: To be furnished with rod/shelf adjustable to 48” above finish floor, at a maximum 21“ shelf depth.

e.Sink Cabinet Clearances: Upper kneespace frontal depth to be not less than 8”, and lower toe frontal depth to be not less than 11”, at a point 9” above finish floor, and as further described in Federal Register Volume 56, Section 4.19.

1.03 SUBMITTALS

A.General Requirements: Provide submittals in accordance with Section 01 33 00.

B.Shop Drawings:

1.Show layout of casework provided under this Section, including plans, elevations, crosssections, and details.

2.Identify types and location of anchors.

3.Provide details of cabinet construction which clearly identify compliance with these Specifications and Drawings.

4.Show layout of casework with relation to surrounding walls, doors, windows, and other building components.

5.Coordinate shop drawings with other related work.

6.Indicate utility service run spaces/provisions, and location of access panels for utility services as required and as coordinated with each utility service installer.

C.Product Data: Submit Product Data on hardware and complete specifications on materials used.

D.Samples:

1.Prior to commencing fabrication of casework, submit a sample of a base cabinet with (1) drawer, (1) door, loose top, and (1) shelf for Architect and MPS review. Sample shall not be less than 24” wide by 36” high. Sample to be sent to MPS Carpenter Shop and to remain there until successful completion of the project. Samples shall be picked up by fabricator after completion of the project.

1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.Manufacturer Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified in this Section with not less than 10years of documented experience.

1.05 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A.Packing and Shipping: Protect casework in transit.

B.Delivery: Deliver casework and countertops only after wet (moisture producing) operations in building are completed and the required environmental conditions are as specified under this Section.

C.Storage and Protection:

1.Store casework under cover in a ventilated building not exposed to extreme temperature and humidity changes.

2.Do not install casework in building until wet operations have been completed and dry conditions exist with relative humidity not exceeding 50percent.

D.Protection:

1.Protect finished surfaces from soiling and damage during handling and installation.

2.Keep covered with a protective covering.

1.06 SITE CONDITIONS

A.Environmental Requirements: Not less than 24 hours before, during, and continuously after installation of work of this Section, maintain the same temperature and humidity conditions in building installation areas as will occur after occupancy by Owner.

B.Field Measurements: Where cabinets are indicated to fit to other construction, verify dimensions of other construction by field measurements before fabrication and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings. Coordinate fabrication schedule with construction progress to avoid delaying the work.

  1. Locate concealed framing, blocking, and reinforcements that support cabinets by field measurements before enclosed and indicate measurements on Shop Drawings.

C.Established Dimensions: Where cabinets area indicated to fit to other construction, establish dimensions for areas where cabinets are to fit. Provide allowance for trimming at site and coordinate construction to ensure that actual dimensions correspond to established dimensions.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01 CASEWORK AND COUNTERTOP MATERIALS

A.Laminated Plastics/Finishes:

1.Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements of the Contract Documents, acceptable manufacturers are as follows or Owner approved equal:

a.Formica Corporation

b.Nevamar Corporation

c.Wilsonart International, Inc.

2.Selection: Architect will select colors, patterns, and finish textures of plastic laminate.

3.Horizontal General Purpose Grade: High pressure decorative type plastic laminate in accordance with requirements of NEMA StandardsGP50, Publication LD31980.

4.Vertical General Purpose Grade: High pressure decorative type plastic laminate in accordance with requirements of NEMA StandardsGP28, PublicationLD31980.

5.Horizontal PostForming Grade: High pressure decorative type plastic laminate in accordance with requirements of NEMA StandardsPF42, Publication LD31980.

6.Cabinet Liner: High pressure cabinet liner type plastic laminate in accordance with requirements of NEMA StandardsCL20, Publication LD31980.

7.Backing Sheet: High pressure backing sheet type plastic laminate in accordance with requirements of NEMA StandardsBK20, Publication LD31980.

B.Particleboard: 47pound density, formaldehyde free resin composition board engineered to meet requirements of ANSI A208.1, Grade M3.

C.Pressure Fused Melamine Surfaced Particleboard:

1.Melamine pressure fused to 47pound density particleboard. Particleboard to be a balanced construction with a maximum moisture content of 8percent.

2.Particleboard to meet requirements with ANSI A208.11993.

D.Polyester Laminate Particleboard:

1.Thermosetting polyester resin impregnated overlay bonded to 45pound density particleboard.

2.Particleboard to be a balanced construction with a maximum moisture content of 8percent.

3.Particleboard to meet Commercial Standard CS23666.

4.Polyester laminate to be 9to 11mils in thickness, 62percent resin content, colorfast, and shall meet or exceed NEMA TestLSI2.06.

E.PVC Edge Band:

1.Provide 1mm and 3mm thicknesses where specified.

2.PVC edging to be solid, high impact, purified, colorthrough, and acid resistant.

3.Machine apply edging with hot melt adhesive.

4.Radius exposed edges of edge banding for uniform appearance.

5.Radius outside corners of edge banding.

6.Architect will select colors from edge banding manufacturer’s standard colors.

F.Casework Hardware:

1.Hinges: Heavy duty, 5knuckle, 23/4“ institutional type hinge shall meet ANSI/BHMA A156.9 Grade 1 requirements. Mill ground, hospital tip, tight pin feature with all edges eased. Hinge to be full wrap around type of tempered steel 0.095” thick. Each hinge to have minimum (9) screws, No.7, 5/8“ FHMS to assure positive door attachment. Hinge to accommodate 13/16“ thick laminated door and allow 270 degree swing.

a.Hinge Quantity: (2) for doors up to 48” high; (3) for doors over 48” high.

b.Hinge Finish: ChromeCoat Powder Finish.

2.Pulls: Stanley, Model 34-5840-4477 US26D, 3-1/2” or Owner approved equal.

3.Drawer Slides:

a.Standard Box Drawer Slides: Slides to be full extension type with selfclosing design. White epoxy powder coated with positive instop, outstop, and outkeeper to maintain drawer in 80 percent open position. Captive nylon rollers, front and rear. Minimum 100pound dynamic load rating at 50,000 cycles. Minimum 150pound static load rating. Provide a lifetime warranty from the slide manufacturer.

b.File Drawer Slides: Full extension, 3part progressive opening slide, minimum 100pound, zinc plated or epoxy coated at manufacturer’s option.

c.Paper Storage Drawer Slides: Full extension, 3part progressive opening slide, minimum 100pound, zinc plated or epoxy coated at manufacturer’s option.

4.Catches: Magnetic type. Ives, No. 323A69, Aluminum-Bronze, metal finish, or Owner approved equal.

5.Elbow Catches:

a.Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements of the Contract Documents, acceptable manufacturers are as follows or Owner approved equal:

1)H.B. Ives Company, No. 2 Elbow Catch

b.Provide 1 elbow catch for inactive leaf of each locked pair of casework doors.

6.Locks: Provide locks on doors and drawers where noted on Drawings, which comply with following requirements:

a.Acceptable Manufacturer: Model CCL Security Products, 0737 7/8 US26D, key to 4T37526 in classrooms, administration areas and nurses offices on separate keys or Owner approved equal.

b.Disc tumbler cylinder cam type locks for overlay cabinet construction.

c.Separately keyed locks shall have (2) keys.

d.Key locks in accordance with Owner’s instructions. Provide master keys as directed.

e.Locks shall engage metal strike plate.

f.Locks shall not use double or triple bitted keys.

g.Locks shall permit withdrawal of keys without locking.

7.Adjustable Shelf Supports:

a.Injection molded polycarbonate, clear color to blend with selected interior finish, friction fit into cabinet end panels and vertical dividers, readily adjustable on 32mm (approximately 11/4”) centers.

b.Each shelf support to have (2) 2“ integral support pins, 5mm diameter, to interface predrilled holes, and to prevent accidental rotation of support.

1)Provide supports that are designed to readily permit field fixing of shelf if desired.

c.Provide non-tip feature for shelving.

8.Wardrobe Rod: 11/16“ diameter, chrome plated steel rod supported by appropriate flanges.

9.Coat Hooks:

a.Single Coat Hooks, Wall Mounted: Aluminum with satin finish.

b.Double Coat Hooks, Wall Mounted: Aluminum with satin finish.

10.Grommets: ABS plastic with cap. Architect will select color from manufacturer’s full range of standard colors.

a.Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements of the Contract Documents, acceptable manufacturers are as follows or Owner approved equal:

1)Doug Mockett & Company, Inc.

b.Model and Size:

1)LO Series: “King Kong”; 61/2“ by 3“ overall size, large oval.

2)TG Series: 1 7/8“ inside diameter, 2 3/8“ overall diameter.

3)XG Series: 2 3/4“ inside diameter, 3 1/2“ overall diameter.

2.02 FABRICATION OF CABINETS

A.General Requirements: Agri-board may be used where particleboard is specified within this Section.

1.Particleboard cabinet components to be of the following minimum core thicknesses prior to application of plastic laminate surfacing:

a.3/8“: Concealed cabinet backs; drawer bottoms.

b.1/2“: Drawer sides and back. Drawer under-bottom stiffners.

c.5/8“: Drawer subfronts.

d.3/4“: Base and tall cabinet tops and bottoms; cabinet sides, which are not exposed at completion of installation; shelving up to 30” wide located behind solid cabinet doors; drawer spreaders; doors; drawer fronts; cabinet back rear hangstrips; dividers; exposed cabinet backs.

e.1“: Wall cabinet tops and bottoms; shelving 30” wide and over located behind solid cabinet doors; all widths of exposed cabinet shelving.

B.Cabinet Design:

1.Flush overlay design with radius on corners of drawers and doors.

2.Factory fabricate laminate faced casework to dimensions, profiles, and details noted on Drawings.

C.Fabrication of SubBase: Project site fabricated as specified under Part 3 of this Section.

D.Cabinet Joinery:

1.Join cabinet tops and bottoms to ends using not less than (6) dowels at each joint for 24“ deep cabinets and not less than (4) dowels at each joint for 12“ deep cabinets.

2.Dowels to be industrial grade hardwood laterally fluted, with chamfered ends and not less than a 10 mm diameter.

3.Dowel in place internal cabinet components, including fixed horizontals, rails, and verticals.

4.Securely glue dowels and clamp cabinets under pressure during assembly to assure secure joints and cabinet squareness.

E.Fabrication of Casework Cabinets With Closed Interiors:

1.Exposed cabinet sides to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated on exterior with high pressure decorative laminate GP28 and balanced with high pressure cabinet liner CL20. Cover front edges with 3mm PVC edge banding.

2.Concealed cabinet sides to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated both sides with pressure fused melamine in neutral color. Cover front edges with 3mm PVC edge banding.

3.Unit top or subtop to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated both sides with pressure fused melamine. Cover front edge with 3mm PVC edge banding. Subtops to be full depth. Sink base units to have a 3/4“ front and rear stretcher in lieu of full subtop. Depth of stretcher varies with sink size and location.

4.Bottom of base and wardrobe cabinets to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated both sides with pressure fused melamine. Cover front edge with 3mm PVC edge banding.

a.Cover both sides of sink cabinet bottoms with CL20 plastic laminate.

5.Fixed intermediates to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated both sides with melamine. Cover front edge with 3mm PVC edge banding. Provide intermediate on units over 36” wide.

6.Cabinet Backs:

a.Concealed Cabinet Unit Backs: 3/8“ thick particleboard with pressure fused melamine on both sides in neutral color. Cabinet backs to be fully housed into sides, top, and bottom and recessed 7/8” from cabinet rear.

b.Exposed Cabinet Unit Backs and Exposed Ends: 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated with CL20 on interior to match melamine color and GP28 on exterior as selected by Architect.

c.Attach cabinet backs using waterproof hot melt adhesive.

7.Cabinet Interiors Behind Doors: Pressure fused white melamine laminate or high pressure balancing sheet (cabinet liner CL20) on cabinet sides, back and bottom and under side of subtop.

8.Fixed and Adjustable Shelves in Enclosed Cabinets: Shelves concealed behind solid doors.

a.Shelf Core and Surface Material: Either polyester laminate on both sides of particleboard core or particleboard core with a high pressure plastic laminate balancing sheet (cabinet liner CL20) on both sides.

b.Shelf Thickness: 3/4” for shelves in cabinets up to 30” wide; 1” for shelves in cabinets 30” and more wide.

c.Shelf Edging: Cover front and back edges of shelves with 1 mm PVC, in color selected by Architect, cover side edges with plastic laminate in color/pattern selected by Architect.

F.Fabrication of Casework Cabinets With Open Interiors:

1.Exposed sides/ends of an open cabinet to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated both sides with high pressure decorative laminate GP28. Cover front edge with 3mm PVC edge banding.

2.Concealed sides of an open cabinet (adjacent to a wall, enclosed cabinet, or similar condition) to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated on interior with high pressure decorative laminate GP28 and balanced with high pressure backer BK20. Cover front edge with 3mm PVC edge banding.

3.Unit top or subtop to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated with GP28 and balanced with high pressure backer BK20. Cover front edge with 1mm PVC edge banding. Subtops to be full depth and width of cabinet.

4.Bottom of base to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated on interior with high pressure decorative laminate GP28 and balanced with high pressure backer BK20. Cover front edge with 3mm PVC edge banding.

5.Fixed intermediates to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated both sides with high pressure decorative laminate GP28. Cover front edge with 3mm PVC edge banding. Provide an intermediate on units over 36” wide.

6.Exposed back on fixed or movable cabinet to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated both sides with high pressure decorative laminate GP28.

7.Interiors in Open Cabinets: Vertical general purpose grade (GP28) high pressure plastic laminate on cabinet sides, back, and bottom. Colors shall match cabinet exteriors.

8.Fixed and Adjustable Shelves in Open Cabinets or Behind Glass Doors:

a.Shelf Core and Surface Material: Particleboard core with vertical general purpose grade (GP28) plastic laminate both sides.

b.Shelf Thickness: 1” for all cabinet widths.

c.Shelf Edging: Cover all edges with 1mm PVC edging, or vertical general purpose grade (GP28) plastic laminate, in color to match color of plastic laminate on face of shelves.

G.Wall Unit Bottom:

1.Units with open interiors shall be 1“ thick particleboard laminated with high pressure decorative laminate GP28 on the inside, color as selected. Laminate outside with CL20, neutral color to match adjacent unit bottom.

2.Units with closed interiors to be 3/4“ thick particleboard laminated both sides with pressure fused melamine laminate in neutral color.

3.Cover front edge with 3mm PVC edge banding.

4.Cover exposed bottom edge of each wall cabinet side with 3mm PVC edge banding.

H.Wall and Tall Unit Tops:

1.Cover top edge of wall and tall unit end panels with 3mm PVC edge banding.

2.Raw edges at top of wall and tall unit end panels is not permitted.

3.Top to be 1” thick particleboard laminated with pressure fused melamine in neutral color to match interior color.

I.Door and Drawer Fronts:

1.Fronts shall be not less than 3/4“ thick particleboard core with GP28 plastic laminate adhesively bonded on exterior surface and CL20 plastic laminate balancing sheet adhesively bonded on interior surface. Cover edges with 3mm PVC edge banding.

2.Provide double doors on cabinets which are in excess of 24” in width.

3.Clearance between doors and drawers to be 1/8”.

J.Drawer Construction:

1.Drawer fronts to be applied to drawer subfront.

2.Drawer bodies, including sides, back, and subfront to be 1/2“ thick particleboard, laminated with pressure fused melamine in neutral color.
