E.J. Conrad High School Discipline Philosophy

Our top priorities are student safety and student achievement, we will hold students accountable for their actions to prepare them for life beyond high school and citizenship. We will provide a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment for each student to reach their full potential. Students, parents, and schools share the responsibility for discipline.

Role of School Stakeholders

Teachers

Teachers are expected to prepare engaging lessons and utilize data to drive instruction daily.

Other School Staff

All School staff members are expected to assure the school is a safe environment that is conducive to learning for students.

Students

Students are expected to abide by the Dallas Independent School district’s student code of conduct and to compete at all endeavors with E.J. Conrad Charger Spirit.

Parents

Parents are expected to work in unison with Emmett J. Conrad High School to create a great learning experience for students.

Campus Expectations

Our campus expects each individual to make respect a priority and reach his/her full potential by applying themselves in a manner that is conducive to learning and the betterment of the school environment.

School Wide Academic Standards

All students are expected to:

Arrive at school on time

Stay on task

Complete classwork on time

Complete homework on time

School Wide Behavior Standards

All students are expected to:

Follow classroom and common area rules

Listen and follow directions the first time

Have needed materials ready

Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself

Be respectful of others and property

School Procedures

Buses

Students privileged with an opportunity to ride a bus to school will be punished for misbehavior conducted on buses according to the campus’ discipline compact and Dallas ISD Student Code of Conduct.

Classrooms

Students are expected to arrive to all classes in a timely fashion and help create a positive learning environment by abiding by all components of the Dallas Independent School District’s Student code of conduct. In the event A student cannot comply, he/she will be given a consequence that aligns with the campus’ discipline compact.

Transition between classes

Students are expected to transition seamlessly from class to class in a timely manner. There should be no loitering in the halls during times of transition.

Hallways during times of instruction

Students are not allowed in hallways during times of instruction unless he/she has acquired a pass from a teacher or the main office. Any students in the hall without a pass will be returned to his/her prior destination or the Focused Learning Lab for repeated action.

Cafeteria

Students are not allowed to leave trays on the table after consumption of lunch. Trays are to be trashed upon completion.

Referrals

Received referrals will be processed within 1 week of its submission. Administrators will use the Campus’ Discipline Compact to consistently assign consequences.

Celebrations and Rewards

PBIS Celebrations

The campus’ PBIS team will meet each grading period to discuss campus performance in Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports. The team will assess its effectiveness and celebrate its successes campus wide.

Honor Awards Ceremony for academic, attendance, and behavior performance

A grade level awards ceremony will be conducted at the end of the school year to celebrate students who have excelled throughout the duration of the school year.

Super Charger

Each year a senior will be a given a teacher nominated and voted award for school participation, academics, behavior, and community service.

Conrad Cash

Students may be awarded a form of currency accepted only on the campus of Emmett J. Conrad High School for exemplary behavior.

Classroom Awards and Incentives

At least once per marking period, teachers will award students based on academics, behavior, and attendance.

Referral Process

*Please know that parent/guardian contact must occur before completing a referral

Teacher requirements:

1.)Provide/define clear expectations and rules for the classroom

2.)Redirect behavior of off task students

3.)Change classroom seating

4.)Provide cues for expected behaviors

5.)Make telephone/personal contact with parent/guardian regarding inappropriate behavior

6.)Classroom level consequences

*Once all strategies have been exhausted you may proceed to a level 1 referral. Please provide documentation of strategies used to help the student prior to writing the referral.

Completing the Teacher Discipline Referral Process

Clear description of the incident (identify all students involved)

Document your efforts to resolve the situation (in class)

Document parent/guardian contact

Print and sing the referral

Teacher referrals should be sent to the Campus Behavior Coordinator or appropriate administrator in a timely manner (48 hours)

Behavioral Intervention Programs

Conflict Resolution

In the event a conflict amongst students has been identified, all parties involved will meet with the Campus Disciplinary Coordinator to resolve the issue.

Character Education

The campus PBIS Team will roll out a different initiative each 6 week period targeted to help students and teachers respond positively to incidents.

Bullying Prevention

E.J. Conrad High School is a bully free zone and it will be posted prominently on every hall and personified through the actions of both students and staff. In the event a student is being bullied, the bully will be brought to justice expeditiously.

Behavior Intervention Class (In School Suspension)

This class will be conducted in our campus’ Focused Learning Lab (FLL). Students will always be occupied with either class assignments or writing assignments.

Out of School Suspension

In the event a student is suspended, he/she will be given a reading/writing assignment to submit upon his/her return.

Saturday Consequence

Students will attend school on the mornings of Saturday tutoring/Intervention and either receive instruction for the content area he /she still needs to pass a state exam in order to graduate. Students may also be given an article and a writing prompt to complete before leaving.
