Monthly Report – September 2016

Vaccination

Total number of dogs vaccinated in September 2016 = 4,214 (up until 25thSeptember 2016)

On the 10th September 2016, Mission Rabies teams completed the annual vaccination of dogs in Mormugao Taluka. Mormugao is the sixth taluk in Goa state to be intensely vaccinated in 2016 and the total number of dogs vaccinated was 6,047. The map below highlights the total vaccination coverage achieved (74%).

Mormugao Taluk – Total Vaccination Coverage

Upon completion of Mormugao, the teams moved to Salcete Taluk in South Goa and completed vaccination in ten panchayats. On the 25th September 2016, the teams moved north for the launch of the month long mass vaccination in Bardez. During the campaign, the teams will aim to vaccinate 10,000 dogs across Bardez taluk. The following flyer indicates the areas where the teams will be vaccinating throughout October and the schedule. Additional events are organised for the mass campaign including a school rally and an official ceremony. The ceremony will also mark the opening of the WVS Hicks International Training Centre in Goa.

In addition to the above, two suspected rabies cases tested negative on post-mortem. Further analysis will be conducted to confirm the results.

Team structure

On the 19th September 2016, Mission Rabies welcomed Dr Gowri Yale to the team as the new Scientific and Technical Manager. Dr Gowri will work closely with the teams in Goa to develop the research and technical surveillanceaspect. In addition, Dr Gowri will develop the epidemiology strategy, manage government/veterinary liaison and assist with general aspects of the rabies control programme.

At the beginning of September 2016, a third vaccination team from Ranchi joined Mission Rabies Goa. A further three teams (two from Ranchi and one from the WVS International Training Centre in Ooty) were recruited on the 25th September for the mass campaign. All six teams will stay in Goa until the end of October 2016.
