ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT

According to Melinda Mokalla, Recreation Specialist for the City of Salem, “The motivation behind Serve for Support was first, to find an excuse to play with the pink Penn tennis balls and second, to find a great way to give back to the community.” Therefore it was decided that the YWCA Women’s Breast Cancer Support Group would become the beneficiary of the tournament proceeds.

Serve for Support has become a much bigger tournament than first anticipated when planning began last September. With the help of Brett Hall and Melinda Mokalla, a North Salem High School senior by the name of Shelby Graves, has come aboard to manage the tournament. She is using the tournament as the basis for her senior project. Shelby is a tennis enthusiast! She takes lessons at the Courthouse Tennis Facility, plays for North Salem High School and teaches tennis to youth as a Recreation Leader for the City of Salem.

Brett Hall, the Courthouse Tennis Pro, is not only a big supporter of the Serve for Support but also an avid promoter for the game of tennis. Two of Brett’s biggest donations to tennis in the Salem area has been to provide lessons for Special Olympic athletes as well as free tennis clinics for youth and adults. Brett has been a USPTA professional for more than 27 years. His enthusiasm for the game never wanes!
